Strictly Come Dancing star Johannes Radebe has told how he feels that he’s “already won” the dance competition, as his partnership with Bake Off star John Whaite has improved his relationship with an important member of his family. In a new interview, the South African dance pro opened up about the effect the popular BBC dance show has had on his personal life, explaining that it has brought him closer to his “traditionalist” mum.
And for that, I’ve won
This evening sees Johannes and John take to the dance floor in a bid to win the coveted Glitterball trophy.
The show’s first all-male pairing will go up against EastEnders star Rose Ayling-Ellis and her dance partner Giovanni Pernice, after AJ Odudu was forced to withdraw yesterday due to an injury.
However, the dancer candidly explained that he feels as if he has already won first place in the dance competition.
The star revealed that he’d become closer to his mum thanks to his pairing with former Bake Off winner John.
Johannes said: “My mum’s relationship with me has improved and it has improved because of this partnership, and for that, I’ve won.”
The dance pro told how his mum has been following his and John’s journey closely, revealing that it’s something that hasn’t happened in a while.
“My mum follows my journey with John religiously which is something that hasn’t happened in, I don’t know how long,” he said.
He went on to the Daily Star: “If anything, that for me has been the biggest takeaway from this partnership.”
Johannes explained that his mum’s traditionalist views meant that they had never discussed his role in the dancing community.
“We’ve never confronted me and my issue and this whole thing,” he said, before admitting that she wouldn’t completely understand his pairing with John.
“And I knew that she would [be confused] when I told her about the partnership,” Johannes said.
Relaying the moment he told her that he was dancing with John on the hit dance show, the star revealed that his mum was supportive after watching their first dance.
“She said, ‘Oh, you’re dancing with a man?’ and I said, ‘Yes mummy, I’m dancing with a man and his name is John’,” he explained.
Johannes then said how his mum had hesitated before acknowledging the partnership.
Following Johannes and John’s Tango on week one, the dance pro said his mum had branded their performance “brilliant” and has since then kept tabs on his progress on the BBC show.
Earlier this week, John admitted feeling “exhausted” ahead of tonight’s final.
Appearing on Strictly spin-off show It Takes Two, the Steph’s Packed Lunch star explained that the strenuous dance rehearsals have been taking their toll on him.
Speaking to host Rylan Clark-Neal about being a finalist, John said: “My body’s falling apart, my emotions are all over the place, but I am so happy.
“It’s just been, I’ve said it before, a fast train journey through beautiful scenery and it goes so quick you can’t take it in.
“Whereas, this week it feels like we’re just at the top of the mountain now looking around and we’re having a great laugh,” he added.
The Strictly Come Dancing final airs tonight at 7.10pm on BBC One.
