Kanye West only announced his plans to run for US president this morning but he’s already missed key deadlines.
The All Of The Lights rapper tweeted on Sunday morning (5 July) that he hopes to make a bid for the US presidential elections taking place in November. It would see him as an independent candidate going up against President Donald Trump and presumptive Democatic nominee Joe Biden.
And while Kanye, 43, likes to think big, he might want to act quicker as it seems he’s already missed the chance to appear on the ballot in six states.
According to Ballotpedia, Kanye would have needed to register as an independent candidate in North Carolina by 3 March, May 11 in Texas and 26 May in New York.
He’s also missed the deadline in Maine which was 1 June, in New Mexico which was 25 June and he’s just missed the mark in Indiana, which requires independent candidates to register by 30 June.
It’s still possible Kanye could appear as a write-in candidate but it’s believed these sometimes do not count as the rules vary from state to state.
However if the rapper gets his skates on, he could still register in states such as Florida, South Carolina, Missouri, Michigan and Colorado as their deadlines fall in July.
He also needs to register with the Federal Election Commission although this can be done at any point.
Announcing his White House dreams, Kanye tweeted in the early hours: ‘We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future.
‘I am running for president of the United States [US flag emoji]! #2020VISION [sic].’
He was supported by his wife Kim Kardashian who shared his tweet while Tesla boss Elon Musk immediately replied: ‘You have my full support!’
But others have found it rather amusing, with comedian Tiffany Haddish rinsing the rapper by jokingly declaring her plans to run for president too.
Mirroring Kanye’s dramatic words, the Girls Trip actress tweeted: ‘We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future.
‘I too am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION.’
The banter didn’t stop there as Tiffany continued: ‘Well this just in Dave Chappelle will be my running mate #2020Vision. So #HaddishChappelle2020.’
Kanye has previously expressed his desires to run for presidency and is known to support and respect Trump, controversially meeting the president in the Oval Office in 2018 while wearing a Maga (Make America Great Again) hat.
