Kate Middleton and Prince William lead birthday tributes to Meghan and Harry’s son Archie

Kate Middleton and Prince William have lead the birthday tributes to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s son Archie as he celebrates his first birthday.

The first-born child of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is celebrating turning one, with the couple believed to be having a special day for their son while in lockdown in California.

Kate and William have paid tribute to little Archie, sharing a photo from his christening last year on their Kensington Palace social media page.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrote: “Wishing Archie a very happy birthday today!,” followed by a balloon emoji.

The Queen also paid tribute by sharing a photo of herself meeting Archie for the first time last year, when Meghan and Harry introduced their son to the world.

Alongside the photo, the Royal Family Twitter page wrote: “Happy Birthday to Archie Mountbatten-Windsor who is celebrating his 1st birthday today! Archie is The Queen’s eighth great-grandchild.”

Royal expert Katie Nicholl exclusively tells OK! magazine: “Meghan’s an amazing cook and loves being creative in the kitchen so I think she’ll have been busy baking so Archie can enjoy his first taste of birthday cake this week. It will be organic and possibly sugar-free. Something suitably healthy for a one year old.

“If the weather’s good, I think they’ll be splashing around in the pool too.”

With the Sussexes self-isolating, Meghan’s mum Doria Ragland, who lives a 40-minute drive away in Los Angeles, will have to wish her grandson a happy birthday from a safe distance on 6 May. But Archie won’t be lonely thanks to the presence of his best pals, Guy the Beagle and Oz the Labrador.

“Those two dogs are the family’s saving grace,” says Katie. “They’re extremely good with Archie and he’s very used to them. With no playdates in the diary, I think they’re his best friends at the moment.”

“Archie has everything he needs but his parents don’t spend silly money on toys and clothes,” says Katie. “Gifts for his new nursery will be welcome but they’ll also appreciate presents that hold meaning rather than material value, such as a donation to a children’s charity or sponsoring an animal in the wild.”

There were reports that HM the Queen was buying him a wooden rocking horse, but Katie says, “that’s not really her style, she tends to give understated gifts.” She adds, “The Queen will wish him happy birthday this week via Zoom as will the Cambridge children. They haven’t seen their little cousin in months so they’ve been looking forward to seeing how much he’s grown.”

Something Archie would no doubt love is a sibling. “A little brother of sister for Archie is very much on the agenda,” reports Katie.

“Harry says they’d stop at two so that’s a good indication that two is the magic number for them. They do have a lot going on at the moment, looking for a permanent residence, preparing the launch of their charity and finding their feet in a new town, but they seem to relish being busy and it really wouldn’t surprise me if we get a pregnancy announcement.”
