Kerry Katona has opened up about finding a lump in her breast, which made her realise "that no one is invincible".
Atomic Kitten star Kerry, 42, went through the health scare two years ago, and has now spoken out about the importance of checking your body.
Writing in her weekly column, Kerry shared her experience as she sent her "love and strength" to Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden, who revealed she’s been diagnosed with breast cancer aged 32.
"I met Amy on Steph’s Packed Lunch and she’s a lovely girl," Kerry said. "Amy said she was diagnosed after she began checking her breasts following a CoppaFeel! charity trek she took part in. It just goes to show how important it is to check your body."
Kerry continued: "I found a lump under my breast a couple of years ago and went and got it checked. Thankfully it was OK, but it made me realise that no one is invincible."
Kerry held back tears as she appeared on Channel 4's Steph's Packed Lunch in February 2021 as she opened up about the ordeal.
“It was really really scary," she said. "I did a photoshoot for my clothing range and there was a picture of my arm up. You can see the lump on my armpit. Someone put a comment to get it checked.”
Mum-of-five Kerry explained that she ignored the lump at first, but then realised it needed checking whilst in the shower.
“I was in the shower and I shaved that armpit and I thought, ‘yeah it is a bit of a big lump,’ and then when I’ve gone to shave the other armpit I was like the difference in the lump that was here to this armpit. The last six weeks my right breast had swollen out times five times bigger than my left," she continued.
“I had surgery about a year and a half before on my breasts. Everything was all fine and then six weeks prior to the lump, I kept getting a really achy feeling in my breast. It was so painful.
"I thought something’s not right, the surgery has gone wrong. And then when I found the lump I did the worst thing you could possibly do, I went on Google.”
Speaking about her fears of dying, Kerry went on: “The difference in the breast was so dramatic that I’ve come out of the shower to my fiance and I’m immediately crying. I thought I’d gone through addiction, I’ve gone through bankruptcy, I’ve gone through mental health and I can control all of those, that’s in my power.
“And then I thought that’s it, I’m going to go to the doctors and they’re going to tell me… it really upsets me… you’ve got three, six months left."
She added: "“It was so overwhelming that I thought, ‘God, this is it.’”
Thankfully, Kerry said that a mammogram and an MRI proved that it was not cancerous but damaged related to a previous surgery she’d undergone on her breasts.
