Kim Kardashian has broken her silence on her husband Kanye West’s behaviour, acknowledging that he is having a bipolar episode.
The 39-year-old has remained quiet since Kanye’s presidential campaign launch, during which he claimed that Kim considered an abortion while pregnant with her daughter North.
Since then, the 43-year-old has tweeted that he’s been trying to divorce Kim, and called his mother-in-law Kris Jenner a white supremacist.
Kim wrote on her Instagram stories: ‘As many of you know, Kanye has bipolar disorder. Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how complicated and painful it is to understand. I’ve never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy. But today, I feel like I should comment on it because of the stigma and misconceptions about mental health.
‘Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behaviour know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor. People who are unaware or far removed from this experience can be judgemental and not understand that the individual themselves have to engage in the process of getting help no matter how hard family and friends try.
‘I understand Kanye is subject to criticism because he is a public figure and his actions at times can cause strong opinions and emotions. He is a brilliant but complicated person who on top of the pressure being being an artist and a black man, who experienced the painful loss of his mother, and has to deal with the pressure and isolation that is heightened by his bi-polar disorder.
‘Those who are close with Kanye know his heart and understand his words some times do not align with his intentions.
‘Living with bi-polar disorder does not diminish or invalidate his dreams and his creative ideas, no matter how big or unobtainable they may feel to some. That is part of his genius and as we have all witnessed, many of his dreams have come true.’
Kim concluded: ‘We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however we should also give it to the individuals who are living with in times when they need it the most.
‘I kindly ask that the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this. Thank you for those who have expressed concern for Kanye’s well being and for your understanding.
‘With love and gratitude, Kim Kardashian West.’
Kanye was officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018, and during an appearance on David Letterman’s Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction last year, he explained what it was like to have an episode.
The Yeezy designer said: ‘When you’re in this state, you’re hyper-paranoid about everything.
‘Everyone — this is my experience, other people have different experiences — everyone now is an actor. Everything’s a conspiracy.
‘You feel the government is putting chips in your head. You feel you’re being recorded. You feel all these things.
‘You have this moment [where] you feel everyone wants to kill you. You pretty much don’t trust anyone.’
After his presidential campaign launch, Kanye claimed that Kim and her mum Kris were ‘trying to lock him up’, tweeting: ‘Kim was trying to fly to Wyoming with a doctor to lock me up like on the movie Get Out because I cried about saving my daughters life yesterday.’
The Power rapper later claimed that they tried to have him involuntarily committed.
Sources claimed that Kim had been trying to help her husband for weeks, with an insider telling People: ‘Kanye is in Cody because he doesn’t want help. If he wanted help, he would come back to L.A.’
The source claimed Kim has been consulted with doctors as they added: ‘Kim’s family is around to support her as always. And they love Kanye. They want him to be healthy.’
Kanye is currently on his ranch in Cody, Wyoming.
Kim and Kanye tied the knot in 2014 and have four children together – North, seven, Saint, four, Chicago, two, and one-year-old Psalm.
