Piers Morgan has recalled a conversation he had with Princess Diana 25 years ago. The broadcaster claims the late royal “burst out laughing” as soon as she saw him.

I’m very grateful to you for knocking me off the front pages

Their run in came after he ran “one of the most infamous headlines in tabloid history”.

Writing in his latest column, the Princess of Wales is said to have been unable to prevent herself from remarking.

Piers, 56, revealed what happened as he discussed England’s match against Germany in the Last 16 of the Euros on Tuesday.

It comes a quarter of a centry after they played them in the semi-finals.

While editor of the Daily Mirror, he ran a front page stating: “ACHTUNG! SURRENDER – FOR YOU FRITZ ZE EURO 96 CHAMPIONSHIP IS OVER.”

Remarking on “all hell breaking loose” after it was published, the father-of-four remembered Princess Diana’s comments about it.

“Even mild-mannered Sir Bobby Charlton branded me ‘thick’,” Piers stated.

“But one person was thrilled with my errant jingoistic behaviour.”

He claims he met Princess Diana at the Royal Brompton hospital two days later, who was instantly amused on seeing him.

“‘Well, hello, Mr Morgan, haven’t we been a naughty boy’,” the presenter quotes her as saying.

“‘Yes, your royal highness, very naughty,’ I replied. ‘Must remember not to take the mickey out of the Germans again’.”

He added in The Mail On Sunday: “‘No, indeed,’ she giggled.

“‘Mind you, I’m very grateful to you for knocking me off the front pages’.”

Their exchange happened in 1996, just over one year before Princess Diana tragically died age 36.

It was in the July of the aforementioned year that she and Prince Charles were granted a decree nisi.

Their divorced was finalised the following month, after 15 years of marriage.

It comes just hours after Piers waded in on something else that has been dominating the headlines: the Matt Hancock controversy and his subsequent resignation.

He tweeted to his 7.9 million followers: “Didn’t resign for his abject failures on PPE, testing & care homes that led to Britain having the worst covid death toll in Europe.

“Did resign for being caught snogging his mistress.”

He added: Pretty much sums up Matt Hancock. As the Prime Minister said: ‘Totally f***ing hopeless’.”
