Spencer Matthews has broken his silence about not attending his best friend Jamie Laing and new wife Sophie Habboo's wedding.
The former Made in Chelsea star, 34, who became close mates with McVitie's biscuit brand heir Jamie, also 34, during their time on the popular reality show, has been subject to an onslaught of criticism and confusion from fans over the last few days.
After speculation that Spencer had purposefully "snubbed" his best friend by deciding to go on holiday to Portugal with his wife Vogue Williams, 37, and their three children at the same time, he has now claimed that he wasn't even "invited".
It began when Jamie and Sophie, 29, tied the knot in a legal wedding ceremony at the Chelsea Registry Office in West London on Friday 14 April.
The couple tee'd fans up for their low-key wedding ceremony in advance, and made it clear their main celebration would be taking place in Seville, Spain, in May.
Yet when Jamie and Sophie appeared dressed up to the nines and with a large group of their close friends in tow – which the former showcased at a slap-up wedding dinner in the city, fans were puzzled.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Spencer & Vogue podcast, the couple set the record straight after being on the receiving end of some "really mean messages" as a result of their absence.
“Sophie looked absolutely magnificent, we were absolutely thrilled for them, but we also did not know it was happening because we were not invited," the Finding Michael star explained. “I’m being absolutely hammed for ‘snubbing’ my best friend’s wedding to go on holiday…
"I’m not here to b***h about my best friend but there’s been some serious miscommunication from him.”
“I just want set the record straight," Spencer continued. "I’m not here to whinge. I was not invited to this part of Jamie’s wedding, and neither was Vogue.”
OK! has contacted a representative for Jamie for a comment.
The star went on to say that he even asked Jamie if there was anything he could do for the registry about 10 days ago when they were recording their podcast 6 Degrees.
Spencer was keen to make sure that Jamie knew he would be there to assist if needed as he is one of the groom's best men, but was told in no uncertain terms that the event would be a "very small family thing".
Jamie also insisted that there was hardly anyone coming to wedding and it would be a "tiny" affair, according to Spencer, which left him even more confused when he returned from his holiday abroad to an article saying he'd "snubbed" the wedding.
Spencer then saw pictures from the day of Jamie surrounded by the other groomsmen and thought "What the f**k is happening here?"
The disappointed star went on to say that he had an inbox full of angry people demanding to know why he wasn't at the wedding, and he was "actually quite p****d off" himself.
After a call to the groom the following day, Spencer finally learned that the day had gotten bigger and there was "never supposed to be groomsmen and bridesmaids there", but Jamie and Sophie simply decided to make more of the celebrations than originally planned.
With Spencer away in Portugal anyway, he said Jamie claimed it didn't "cross his mind" to call.
Dad-of-three Spencer told his listeners that if he'd been invited, he would have "flown over to Japan" if it had been required because Jamie is his best friend and he would have really wanted to be present at his wedding day, but insisted it's "water under the bridge now".
The star added that he "loves Jamie and Sophie" and they're "very close friends," and Jamie has been "profusely apologising" for the huge misunderstanding, explaining the saga was simply a "big mistake".
Vogue also clarified that she and Spencer were "in no way fighting with Jamie or Sophie" and hoped they had a great wedding day.
