If you’ve watched the two first films from the Fast & Furious franchise, you might be curious as to how Paul Walker’s character, Brian O’Conner, ended up in Miami with a Nissan Skyline GT-R. At the end of the original movie, the last we see of him is on the street, walking away after the big, climactic drag race. But in the beginning of 2 Fast 2 Furious, he shows up on the other side of the country rocking one of the coolest tuner cars around.
Neither of the two movies explain the transition, but the studio actually made a short film starring Paul Walker that shows what happened. Titled The Turbo Charged Prelude to 2 Fast 2 Furious, it shows O’Conner skipping town and heading east, street racing with a Mitsubishi 3000GT along the way to earn enough money to buy a GT-R off a used car lot (yes, we know, it’s ridiculous). He eventually restores it, and takes it across the country, going head-to-head with a Ferrari 360 Spider along the way.
Craig Lieberman, senior producer for the first few Fast & Furious films, explains in his latest video this film was originally only available with a special-edition DVD of the first movie released just three days before 2Fast 2 Furious opened in theaters. So you can be forgiven if you’ve never seen it.
Lieberman walks us through what it took to make the short film, explaining the Mitsubishi wasn’t actually turbocharged. He also acknowledges the absurdity of finding an actual R34 Skyline at a sketchy used car dealership, pointing out the car was one of several Motorex loaners used in the second film.
