Turns out, even the royal family is looking forward to a clean slate for 2022—particularly, Prince William and Kate Middleton.
This is totally fair, of course, given the general ball of blah that 2021 has been for, well, pretty much everyone. A royal source told Us Weekly that the Cambridge family is looking forward to getting together with the rest of the royal fam again this year after the Queen was forced to cancel the annual celebration in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“The Cambridges are spending Christmas with the Queen at Sandringham. It’s going to be a big family affair,” the source said. “George, Charlotte and Louis are absolutely delighted to be seeing their great grandmother in person again.”
According to the source, Will and Kate are already looking ahead to after the holidays though, and see 2022 as a kind of fresh start.
“[William and Kate] are looking forward to starting fresh in the New Year. We’ll be seeing a transition of responsibility — they’re taking on additional charity work, attending more events and making appearances,” the source added. “There’s even a royal tour in the works, and of course they’re heavily involved in the Platinum Jubilee.”
While it seems like Will, Kate, and the rest of the Cambridge family will be spending Christmas with the royals at Sandringham, it’s not as clear if Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their children, Archie and Lilibet, will be joining them. In October, there were reports that the Sussexes were planning to make the trip across the pond for the holidays, but by mid-November, royal sources were quoted speculating that Harry and Meghan’s family wouldn’t be attending the royal Christmas celebrations after all.
“There’s a lot that goes into the logistics and the planning of the family Christmas, so of course, staff know that Harry and Meghan are not coming,” a source said (per Vanity Fair). “If they were, they would have communicated it to their family by now. But this is Her Majesty’s first Christmas without her husband, so one would have hoped they would want to be with her.”
Of course, it’s still possible that the Sussexes are planning a trip and just (understandably) keeping their travel plans low-key. We’ll just have to wait and see if they show up in Sandringham.
