Android WhatsApp users warned over trick to read deleted texts that takes data

WhatsApp messages once deleted, aren’t gone forever. But if you’re going to retrieve them, you need to be careful about how you do it.

Many Android users have picked up a trick that lets them read deleted WhatsApp messages. It involves downloading one of several different apps that can be used to retrieve the deleted messages.

One such app is called WAMR, which can retrieve deleted data not just from WhatsApp, but Facebook Messenger and other platforms as well.

As useful as this app seems, you could be risking the safety of your phone and data by downloading it. Here's what you need to know about it.

What warning has been issued to Android users about deleted WhatsApp messages?

WAMR, which is known to be able to retrieve deleted data is thought to have been downloaded more than 10 million times.

Due to encryption on Android devices, the app can't access your messages directly. What the app does instead is use your notification history to read the messages and create a message backup.

The app will detect a deleted message and then show you a notification. Other additional media like pictures, videos, animated gifs, audio, voice notes, documents and stickers may also be recovered from messages.

However, using the app is not the official way to recover deleted messages. You might not only face limitations from the Android operating system, but there's also a privacy risk involved with downloading the app.

To install the WAMR app, several permissions must be granted for it on your Android device. When you grant these permissions, it could end up compromising data from other apps on your phone.

Some of the data which might be accessed and compromised by the WAMR app are your internet search history and contact lists, according to Information Security Newspaper.

Users are being warned and asked to consider if downloading an app like WAMR, which could compromise the data and security on your phone, is worth the risk.

There is actually a much easier and safer way for both Apple and Android users to get a hold of deleted WhatsApp messages.

Deleted messages are stored on your phone and can be found again using WhatsApp's backup feature.

This tool backs up all of your messages, with users being able to choose when there messages are backed up – whether daily, weekly and monthly – or choosing not to back them up at all.

In order to read a deleted message, all you need to do is uninstall WhatsApp and then install it again. When you log back in, the app will give you an option to restore chats from backup.

If you choose this option, the chats that appear in the app will also include your deleted messages.
