The coronavirus has infected at least 35 people from the UK, England’s Chief Medical Officer has confirmed. Professor Christ Witty said one patient from Essex had “no relevant travel”, while others have been to Italy and Iran recently.
Three of the patients were in close contact with an infected person here in the UK, confirming the coronavirus’ ability to rapidly spread from human to human.
The patients are from London, West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Hertfordshire and Gloucestershire.
Globally, the coronavirus has infected more than 86,000 people and killed nearly 3,000, the majority of whom were at the epicentre in China’s Hubei Province.
Officials have also confirmed the death of a British man who was quarantined off the coast of Japan on the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

China remains at the centre of the epidemic after the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus first emerged in Wuhan City, Hubei Province.
Since the epidemic began last December, the disease has spread to more than 30 countries.

South Korea has suffered the worst outbreak outside of mainland China with more than 3,500 infections as of March 1.
The second biggest outbreak outside of China is in Italy, where more than 1,000 people have so far tested positive for COVID-19.
Nearly 600 infections have also been confirmed in Iran and more than 200 in Japan.
COVID-19 is a respiratory disease triggered by a pathogen from the coronavirus family.
The initial onset of symptoms inlaces dry cough, fever, fatigue and nausea.
As the coronavirus disease develops, symptoms can deteriorate into full-blown pneumonia.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates the virus incubates inside of the body for up to 14 weeks.
The Department of Health and Social Care and Public Health England have so far tested more than 10,000 people for coronavirus.
Although the WHO is treating the coronavirus as a global emergency, the UK Chief Medical Officers believe the risk to public safety is “moderate”.
The Government website reads: “Based on current evidence, novel coronavirus (COVID-19) presents with flu-like symptoms including a fever, a cough, or difficulty breathing.
“The current evidence is that most cases appear to be mild.
“Those who have died in Wuhan appear to have had pre-existing health conditions.”
In some cases, the infected do not show or develop any symptoms and become asymptomatic carriers.
