A dietitian has revealed her five Christmas party hacks to keep your diet on track, and why you should only ever eat three canapés at any one function.

Susie Burrell, from Sydney, explained that many of us overdo things a little during the silly season, but there are a few key things you can do for the remainder of December to avoid a ‘complete calorie overload’.

‘The first thing I always tell my clients is you should never arrive at an event ravenous as you will demolish everything and anything in sight,’ Susie explained on her website.

Instead, the dietitian recommends you ‘take the edge off’ by eating a protein-rich snack an hour or two before like cheese and crackers, a protein ball or some Greek yoghurt.

The second thing Susie recommends is standing as far away from the food as possible. 

‘Did you know we will eat double the amount of food when we can see it?’ she said.

For this very reason, if you stand away from the buffet table, this will be a natural way to control your calorie intake.

‘Limit yourself to just three of them at any one function and ensure that you eat a salad or soup at some point during the day to compensate for the extra party calories that are found in chips, dip and pastries,’ she said. 

There are some foods that are better than others when choosing a canapé, too.

While pastry-based treats, cheese and some dips are bad, other foods like popcorn, breadsticks, low fat dips and crackers and seafood-based snacks are the best choices.

Finally, Susie said you need to keep an eye on the drinks you’re enjoying, as the festive season ‘should not be seen as an excuse to forget your personal limits with your alcohol intake’.

To do this, the dietitian recommends two alcohol-free nights each week to give your liver a break, and make sure you’re continuing to keep your water intake high despite drinking alcohol.

If you are drinking, some options like vodka, lime and soda and champagne are the lowest in calories, while high calorie mixers like juice and soft drinks will add unnecessary calories.
