The Holby City Spring Trailer was released today and while it includes a number of storylines packed with drama — Essie’s (Kaye Wragg) cancer returning, Fletch’s (Alex Walkinshaw) cancer diagnosis, Xav’s (Marcus Griffiths) suspicions as Cam’s (Nic Jackman) mask begins to slip — one of the most notable things is the guest appearance from none other than the fab-u-lous John Barrowman.
John is set to grace the Holby City wards for just one episode as consultant Drew Nicholson-Heath.
Drew is a renowned global recruiter and is always on the lookout for talented surgeons to poach, and it’s not long before certain members of the team are doing all they can to impress him.
While we don’t know much about Drew and or the reasons why he’s arrived at Holby, actor John — who recently returned to Doctor Who as Captain Jack Harkness — revealed how he feels to be a part of another British TV show:
‘Being part of another iconic BBC drama is just fabulous. I was welcomed with open arms by the cast and crew and felt like part of the Holby City family right away. My character Drew brings a new flavour to the show and I look forward to his return soon. Surgery will never be the same again’.
As noted earlier, the trailer doesn’t give much away about Drew, and the first clip of him is with Ange and Fletch but — as Simon Harper, Executive Producer of Holby City and Casualty says — the character’s connection with Ange (Dawn Steele) is a little more than friendship:
‘It’s a major thrill to have a star and household name of John Barrowman’s calibre guesting on the wards as the charismatic Drew, who is set to ruffle the feathers of an increasingly beleaguered Cameron and get some serious banter in with his ex, Ange.’
So if Drew is on the lookout for new surgeons, could we be about to say goodbye to one of our Holby favourites? If so, who could it be? A new life elsewhere for Cameron as he struggles to keep Evan’s death a secret could be a good option, but if Ange is still in love with Drew, could she be set to leave the Holby City wards?
We know from the trailer that Fletch will get diagnosed with cancer, so could Ange be forced to make a decision and choose between staying at Holby and supporting Fletch through his cancer battle, or leaving Holby and starting a new and exciting life elsewhere with Drew?
Holby City continues Tuesday 10 March at 8pm on BBC One.
