Your daily exercising during lockdown isn’t limited to a walk, a run or a cycle. Just fifteen minutes of yoga can burn up to 100 calories, depending on the type of yoga you are practising. Yoga is an active version of me-time, and a reason to get your blood flowing before you start work. Express.co.uk spoke to Jordan Ashley, Founder of Souljourn Yoga to find out why you should rise and shine with yoga.
Why should you start your day with yoga?
Jordan said: “Yoga instills self-care and carves out time for you to just move and breathe before the emails come in or the make-up comes.
“It on will not only support you physically and mentally, but will also make a difference in how you feel and approach the rest of your day.”

Have you ever thought about working out at home, but then been too lazy to actually get up, get changed, and get your equipment together?
Sometimes the worst part of being active is the preparation.
If you are someone who hates exercise and builds yourself up only to flake out, there is no excuse when it comes to yoga.
Jordan explained: “One of the great things about doing yoga at home, especially first thing in the morning is that very little action is required on your part.
“No gym kit packed or reusable water bottle is needed.
“You can literally roll out of bed and onto your mat in your pyjamas.
“The clothes you wear for yoga- like tank tops and sweatpants- can double up as sleepwear.
“Grab your tea or coffee, wipe the sleep out of your eyes, and you are ready to go barefoot and all.”
It can be tempting to drag yourself out of bed five minutes before you have to start working from home.
However, an extra half an hour of laying in bed dreading the day is no good to anyone.
Jordan said: “We typically convince ourselves of why we shouldn’t do something and make all kinds of excuses for avoiding, delaying, or simply putting off something that we know will ultimately be beneficial.
“When someone asks me why yoga I usually reply, “well, why not?
“Why not set your alarm 30 minutes before and do some mindful movement or meditation before you start your work day?
“Setting up a routine, especially one that supports mental and physical wellness is so important not only to nourish ourselves, but also so we can be of better service to our family, partners, colleagues and pets.”

Set up for success
If you spend your morning on the mat, you are more likely to achieve your goals for the rest of the day.
This is the same for any exercise, but yoga wins the trophy.
Jordan commented: “Having a regular practice, especially one that allows you the opportunity for introspection, is so valuable.
“It encourages clarity, intention, and mindfulness, and this will hopefully colour your actions throughout the day.
“Giving yourself a chance to tune in to what you need, be it a more invigorating, physical practice or a calming, seated meditation, means that you are already listening to what you really need as opposed to just functioning on autopilot.”
Fun for everyone
During this strange time, it is easy to get frustrated with those you live with and end up isolating yourself in your room.
Practising yoga with the rest of your household could be the bonding time you need.
Jordan said: “While having a personal practice is extremely valuable, why not get the entire household involved for some down dog action?
“So much of yoga is community oriented,especially if you are used to practicing in a studio with many people that it creates collective consciousness.
“You can reimagine the same inclusive vibe by involving your flatmates, kids, or partners.
“Even having one day a week where everyone piles into the living room for some stretching before school and work starts will surely create some giggles which is never a bad thing, especially on a week day.”
24 hour self-care
Committing to your morning yoga session encourages healthier lifestyle habits, from drinking less alcohol to getting more sleep.
Jordan explained: “If you commit to having a morning yoga practice, you will most likely crawl into bed a little bit earlier the night before to ensure you wake up all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
“Speaking from personal experience, there is nothing worse than doing yoga with a hangover.
“If you set your alarm for your morning practice for the next day, you are more likely to have one glass of wine instead of the whole bottle.
“This will make the world of difference when your alarm goes off.
“You can read a book instead of binging on whatever series you are streaming, and this will make waking up early a much more pleasant experience.
“When the sun comes out, you will be ready to practise yoga rather than pulling the covers over your eyes and oversleeping.”
