Listen up fives, a 10 is speaking: 30 Rock has teased its upcoming reunion special with a first-look trailer, and its as topical as ever.
Created by, written and starring Tina Fey as TV comedy writer Liz Lemon, the irreverent classic was set behind the scenes of a sketch show in New York, modelled on Fey’s own experiences as head-writer on Saturday Night Live.
Initially airing its finale in 2013, it was announced last month that 30 Rock would be returning for a one-off special, reuniting all our favourite characters during the global pandemic.
And (as usual), things get off to a pretty meta start, as Liz (Fey) accosts a New Yorker who fails to wear a face mask in public.
‘Are you scared of the coronavirus now?!’ She asks, tearing off her own mask to reveal a secondary one, which seems to bear a picture of her own open mouth.
‘Another successful interaction with a man!’ She screams, and its nice to see that nearly a decade may have passed, but Liz Lemon remains…well, Liz Lemon.
Also, for all the girls and gays wondering – yes, don’t worry, Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski) is present, talking to Liz via phone from her apartment, joined by a picture of herself.
Like we said, it’s nice to see that somethings don’t change.
As post-modern and self-referential as ever, it was announced that the 30 Rock reunion – also starring Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan – will also double-up as an upfront special for home network NBC.
Elsewhere, Fey also hit the headlines last month, after she requested that episodes from the series featuring the use of blackface be removed from streaming services.
‘As we strive to do the work and do better in regards to race in America, we believe that these episodes featuring actors in race-changing makeup are best taken out of circulation,’ she said in a statement to Variety.
‘I understand now that intent is not a free pass for white people to use these images. I apologise for the pain they have caused.’
30 Rock’s special airs on NBC in the US. Episodes are available in the UK via NOW TV.
