Batwoman casts Javicia Leslie as first Black actress to take on TV role

Javicia Leslie will be taking over from Ruby Rose as Batwoman in the CW superhero series, and she is the first Black actress to take on the role on television.

The 34-year-old confirmed she’d be leaving the role earlier this year, but is more than OK with her replacement.

Taking to Instagram, Ruby congratulated Javicia, giving her the seal of approval.

‘OMG!! This is amazing!!’ the actress wrote alongside a picture of the DC newcomer. ‘I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman.

‘I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing!!’

Javicia celebrated over on her own feed, telling her followers: ‘For all of the little black girls dreaming to be a superhero one day… it’s possible!’

Deadline confirmed the news and revealed that the actress will be playing a new character named Ryan Wilder.

She said in a statement: ‘I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television.

‘And as a bisexual woman, I am honoured to join this groundbreaking show, which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.’

Caroline Dries, who created the series recently explained the decision behind introducing a new character instead of replacing Ruby’s Kate Kane.

She said: ‘I’m inventing a whole new character who in her past was inspired by Batwoman, so she will take on the mantle and is completely maybe not the right person at the time to be doing it, so that’s what makes it fun.

‘The character in terms of reboot Batwoman as a different character, and also respect everything that Ruby put into the Kate Kane character.

‘And I just think it helps the audience a little bit too, that we are not asking them to not address the elephant in the room.’
