Former EastEnders star Carol Harrison has admitted there is part of her that wishes she never accepted a role on the soap.
The actress played Tiffany Mitchell’s mum Louise on the show in the 90s, and was involved in a huge storyline when Louise had an affair with her daughter’s husband Grant.
Carol, who left the soap in 1999, feels that playing Louise might have led to her being ‘typecast’.
Speaking about why she decided to study for a screenwriting MA, she said: ‘It was a difficult time, and I took myself out of the spotlight because what I was being offered were these same sort of parts, older women who were predatory on young men. But dressed up as something else.
‘I wanted to play what a woman in her 40s would be, seen a bit of life, sassy and taking on the world and with a bit more experience.
‘What I’ve said, and I’ve never really said before, is that in some ways I really wish I hadn’t have taken that part because I’d never really been typecast before, but at first it was fabulous because she was all of those things that us glorious women are when we get over 40, it went downhill, didn’t it?’
She later clarified her regrets over playing Louise.
‘I loved the part I was playing. I loved Louise at the beginning, but I didn’t like the way that woman of that age were being represented and I felt some sort of responsibility to it and I felt helpless,’ she said on Loose Women on Wednesday.
‘It was the regime at that time, I don’t think it’s like that any more. Unfortunately for me, a job that should have been the greatest time in my life… and I’m an East Ender, so I really wanted to be in EastEnders.’
Carol, who is starring in the play Thundergirls with Beverley Callard and Coleen Nolan, previously accused the soap of ‘ageism’ and hit out at the scripts at the time which she felt were ‘demeaning’ to older women, such as when Louise’s lover Gianni called her ‘an old granny’ in a vicious row.
