Coronation Street fans stunned by age gap between Audrey and Gail actresses | The Sun

BOTH Audrey Roberts and Gail Platt have become iconic residents of the cobbles over the decades.

However, Coronation Street viewers were stunned when they discovered their baffling age gap off-screen.

Corrie stalwart Audrey (portrayed by Sue Nicholls) has recently displayed some concerning behaviour as her drinking gets heavier.

But while viewers and residents may be equally concerned for her, none can be more worried than her daughter Gail Platt (played by Helen Worth) and other members of her family.

The pair first settled into Weatherfield in the 1970s as a mother-daughter duo and have had their fair share of squabbles.

It's been easy for soap fans to forget that the actresses who play them on their screens don't have that much of an age gap.

During Wednesday's instalment of the Manchester-based program, viewers realised the lack of difference between Sue and Helen's ages.

The stars are only seven years apart as Sue celebrated her 78th birthday on November 23, 2021, while Helen blew out her own candles, as a 71-year-old, on January 7, 2022.

Jumping on to social media, many viewers have shared their astonishment.

"Just checked, in real life Audrey is 78 and Gail is 71!", one of them wrote as a second agreed: "They both look amazing!"

Another Corrie fan tweeted: "They both look great for their age!"

On-screen, Audrey is trying all she can to keep her family at arm's length from her life, while her reliance on the bottle is clearly getting out of hand.

Speaking of Audrey's family and the way they've treated her alter ego, Sue has said her character simply refuses to be seen "like a child."

"She feels very much as though they have been treating her like a child and like someone who didn’t have the capacity to make her own decisions", she said.
