EastEnders replays 'worst Doof Doof cliffhanger ever' and the cast can't cope

EastEnders has kept the nation riveted for 35 years with compelling storylines and heart-racing Doof Doof cliffhangers.

However, in spite of the ‘Doof Doof’ being associated with showdowns, slanging matches and the best glares known to telly, there was once a time when they perhaps weren’t quite as powerful.

One instance — which is revisited in tonight’s instalment of Secrets From The Square — was from back in 1987, when Kathy Beale’s (Gillian Taylforth) knitting machine… broke.

Yep, that’s right, it broke.

The scene in question arrived after Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) had teamed up with Lofty Holloway (Tom Watt) and Kelvin Carpenter (Paul J Medford) to form Loftelian Enterprises — which is no doubt the best thing you’ve ever heard.

Alexa, play ‘EastEnders theme’.

Reflecting on the scene — which presenter Stacey Dooley referred to as ‘underwhelming’ — Gillian Taylforth said: ‘Over the years, I’ve had quite a few [Doof Doofs] and good strong ones, and then there was… the knitting machine!’

‘Well that kept the nation riveted until next week! I bet there was phone calls coming in left, right and centre! ‘Will she get it fixed?! Oh God, no!’”

One to watch: Monday 27 July at 8pm on BBC One.
