Emmerdale cut to three episodes a week as coronavirus panic spreads

Emmerdale will only air three episodes per week from next Monday, rather than the originally announced five.

Last week, ITV announced that the Yorkshire-based soap would air five episodes a week, instead of six.

This would see the double bill on a Thursday scaled back to just a single episode – however it seems plans have since changed.

The new schedule is now in line with that of Coronation Street, with one episode airing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

When production of shows started getting suspended last week, both Emmerdale and Coronation Street announced it was business as usual.

However just days later, ITV decided to pull the plug.

A statement from the channel read: "We've been doing out best to carry on filming whilst adhering to the government's latest health guidelines, to ensure we've episodes of both soaps airing on ITV until at least early summer.

"However, the health and wellbeing of the production team, actors, crew and their families is of paramount importance to us and we now feel that the time has come to stop filming."

It continued: "We'd like to thank our viewers for their support and hope they continue to enjoy both soaps in the coming months."

The reduced number of episodes will not start happening until March 30, meaning soap fans have a week left of things as normal.

Over on the BBC, EastEnders will air just two weekly episodes, as will Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks.

Hollyoaks has called off filming and will air special "Hollyoaks Favourites" on the evenings when no new episode is broadcast, hosted by Jorgie Porter.
