Fleabag star lands Prince Edward role in The Crown season four

Fleabag star Angus Imrie has landed a royally exciting role on Netflix hit series The Crown after wowing audiences in the Phoebe Waller-Bridge BBC comedy.

The 25-year-old actor – who is the son of acting legend Celia Imrie, 67 – is set to play Prince Edward in season four of the Crown, which is expected to hit screens later this year.

Angus portrayed Creepy Jake in season two of Fleabag – playing the odd step-son of the title character’s sister Claire, played by Sian Clifford.

Now Angus is set to reunite with Fleabag’s Olivia Colman – with the Oscar winning star reprising her role as Queen Elizabeth II in season four of The Crown, with Angus playing her youngest son, Edward, the Earl of Wessex.

Seasons four of The Crown is expected to cover the ‘Thatcher years’ of British history – spanning from 1979 to 1990, while X Files legend Gillian Anderson is set to play Maggie T.

The Durrells star Josh O’Connor will play Prince Charles in the upcoming new season and Erin Doherty is due to reprise her role as Princess Anne.

Meanwhile newcomer Tom Byrne will play controversial Prince Andrew – who has recently come under fire for his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffery Epstein.

The Crown was expected to run for six seasons, but fans were left disappointed earlier this year when it was announced Imelda Staunton will succeed Olivia Coleman to play HM The Queen in a fifth, final, season.

Screenwriter Peter Morgan explained his decision to cut the show short by one year by sharing his fear that running to six seasons would bring the show too close to recent historical events.

“At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons,” he said in January.

“But now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop,” he added.

Claire Foy played The Queen in the first two seasons of the streaming show before handing over the reigns to Olivia.

Some fans were disappointed to see the 35-year-old actress replaced after two seasons – but should be excited to know the star is due to return in season 4, presumably in a flashback scene.
