HBO has confirmed it greenlit House of the Dragon earlier this year. Out of the Game of Thrones prequels and spin-off shows, it was the only one to get the go-ahead. The ill-fated Long Night show got a pilot but it wasn’t to be.
Who will play Aegon Targaryen in House of the Dragon?
Instead, House of the Dragon is going to be the only show from US author George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world to be making it to a full series.
Much like Game of Thrones, the show will be made in one go and episodes are expected to be airing on a weekly basis.
Although there’s much global uncertainty about the future of the series with the global coronavirus pandemic, work had already started on House of the Dragon.
The drama is going to be based on the history of the Targaryens with the series taking place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
- Winds of Winter update: Is The Winds of Winter finished?
This means, none of the characters from the original series are going to be involved in the show unless there’s an unlikely cameo from the Children of the Forest or the Night King (played by Vladimir Furdik).
House of the Dragon will be developed by Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal, who are most likely working on the scripts.
Nevertheless, a purported casting call went out suggesting programme-makers were already looking for actors to play the three leads: Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys Targaryen.
While the casting call couldn’t be verified, it has ignited the imaginations of Game of Thrones fans everywhere who are now speculating about which actor could portray Aegon.
The supposed casting call described the character as “withdrawn, quiet, pious. Harsh with those who defy him”. He is also said to ride a dragon called Balerion.
According to bookmakers Betfair, there are several actors who could play the role of Aegon including Sons of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam, who has been given odds of 8/1.
British actor Hunnam has previously starred in King Arthur which puts him in the frame for a role such as Aegon Targaryen.
But his IMDB page states he’s next going to be working on an adaptation of Shantaram, which means he might not be available for House of the Dragon.
Another name is 50 Shades of Grey and The Fall star Jamie Dornan at 10/1.
Dornan has starred in the fairytale series Once Upon Time and so is no stranger to fantasy.
He’s also able to play complex characters like Paul Spector in The Fall and deliver the nuance for a role such as Aegon.
American actor Armie Hammer has predominantly featured in films including Hotel Mumbai, Call Me By Your Name and Nocturnal Animals.

The star has been given odds of 20/1 and his eclectic acting CV suggests he could take on the role with aplomb.
However, the cast of Game of Thrones was by and large British, so the show could plump for an actor from the UK to take on the part.
Finally, Superman actor Henry Cavill comes in at 25/1 but is very unlikely to be taking on the part due to his commitments to Netflix hit The Witcher.
Cavill already portrays the silver-haired Geralt of Rivia in the series and may not want to take on a project so similar.
Fans have also been speculating on Reddit with some suggesting Vikings actor Travis Fimmel for the part while others have named True Blood actor Alexander Skarsgård.

There were also suggestions British actor Tom Hiddleston could be a good candidate for the role.
One Reddit user called Wasabikhaleesi said: “Personally i love the idea of tom hiddleston playing aegon, i feel like he’d be a pretty good fit for the role.”
Another called Vmemeh added: “Tom Hiddlestone [sic] will be perfect for Aegon Conquest.”
Sadly, Hiddleston could be tied up with work on the Disney+ Loki TV series and have very little time for another series.
