Is Rey From 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' the First Jedi to Have a Golden Lightsaber?

The Skywalker saga has finally come to an end. Thankfully, Rey is not alone in protecting the Jedi order. Is Rey the first Jedi to have a yellow lightsaber? What’s the meaning behind the color change? Here’s what we know about this character and the latest Star Wars release.

Rey is on a new journey to defeat Emperor Palpatine in ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’

With Emperor Palpatine and the First Order out of the way, the Skywalker saga is officially ending. Finally, Rey has a chance to spend time with her chosen family — Finn, Poe, and the rest of the resistance.

She may be one of the last living Jedis, but Rey is not alone. In fact, she’s got the support of her “family,” the Skywalkers, and a brand new lightsaber with a yellow blade. For some Star Wars fans, this is the first time they’ve seen a golden lightsaber.

Why does Rey have a yellow lightsaber at the end of ‘The Rise of Skywalker’?

She’s used Luke’s lightsaber, Leia’s lightsabers, and briefly, during The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren’s lightsaber. Finally, during the end of The Rise of Skywalker, Rey gets a Jedi’s weapon of her own. What’s the meaning behind the shape of Rey’s newest weapon?

Inverse notes that “it’s never said out loud that Rey turned her staff into a lightsaber, nor is there an actual scene of Rey building it.” However, this Jedi used a piece of her staff, which appears during The Force Awakens, to create the hilt of her lightsaber.

This golden lightsaber appears a few times throughout the Star Wars universe. Unfortunately, there aren’t many well-known Jedis with this weapon. According to Screenrant, in “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video games, players can choose between three Jedi classes, the Guardian, the Sentinel, and the Consular.”

“The game describes Sentinels as Jedi who ‘ferret out deceit and injustice.’ They ‘strike a balance between the physical and mental disciplines of the Jedi Order,’ which means that they’re as adept with the Force as they are with their lightsaber,” the article continues.

There are multiple unique lightsabers in the ‘Star Wars’ universe

There have been a few unique lightsabers throughout the Skywalker saga. That includes Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) of the prequel series, who wielded a purple saber.

This unique color came as a request from the actor himself, although it eventually took on a double meaning for Star Wars fans. Some claimed the Jedi traveled to a specific planet for the crystal, according to Screenrant.

Although the sith typically showcase red lightsabers, over the years, there’s been a few distinct shapes. That includes Darth Maul’s dual-sided weapon (later improved upon by dark-side-Rey in The Rise of Skywalker,) and Kylo Ren’s lightsaber, which reportedly has a “cracked kyber crystal,” causing the two smaller blades to emerge.

Episodes of the Star Wars saga, including The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, are available on Disney+, Disney’s streaming platform. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now available for purchase digitally and physically.
