Kate Garraway makes heartbreaking promise to son Billy as dad Derek misses his birthday

Kate Garraway’s son Billy celebrated his 11th birthday at the weekend with a party in his garden of his family home. He was surrounded by his friends to party in a large tent while the Good Morning Britain presenter’s I’m A Celebrity colleague Roman Kemp made an appearance too. Speaking about the celebration on the ITV breakfast show this morning, Kate explained Billy was “overwhelmed” by the surprise but it was strange without husband Derek.

She told host Ben Shephard: “It’s like the queen I told him, with all the challenges with mixing, he’s having four birthdays, the first was with his friends on Saturday.

“Global [Radio] provided a cake delivered by Roman and Martin Kemp.”

Sharing details, Kate continued: “We had a fantastic camp out in the garden in a huge tent which allowed them [the kids] to be separate.

“Billy was completely overwhelmed.

“Bill absolutely loved it, he was completely overwhelmed and a bit emotional.

“But we said we’ll do it again when his dad comes out.”

Kate shared videos and photos from Billy’s birthday on her Instagram over the weekend and admitted she wasn’t sure what to expect.

Alongside a video of Billy finding out what was planned, she wrote: “When Billy woke up he could not believe his eyes!!!!

“Thanks @sleepyteepeeuk & @myleeneklass and the fabulous @ariannemerry … feel so emotional but know Derek will be so proud and pleased. Can never thank you enough…”

In another post, she added: “So I was super nervous about Bill’s birthday this year – we usually have a family do with grandparents & a few of his friends but obviously this not possible.”

Kate returned to present Good Morning Britain last week for the first time since March when her husband was taken into intensive care with coronavirus.

Speaking about the impacts of coronavirus, the mother-of-two revealed she is fearful of how Darcey and Billy will have been affected.

She asked guest Anna Williamson: “I have a particular concern for Darcey and Billy not just for them but suddenly their world is very unsafe.

“But actually all youngsters’ worlds suddenly feel very unsafe. What can we do to navigate our children through that?

“Anna from you briefly, because we could talk about this all day.”

Anna replied: “I know it sounds like such a cliche but talking is so key.

“Also talking to your children about what they are feeling and actually listening because they are very switched on.”

She added: “So, how we can best support themes is by listening to what their concerns and their fears are and troubleshooting them straight away.

“That would be the first thing I would do and children can talk to childline or Mind charity, which Alastair and I are very passionate about.”
