Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway is ‘desperate for a step forward’ following a ‘tough’ trip to see her husband Derek Draper in hospital yesterday.
Derek has been in hospital since March with coronavirus, and the presenter shared news of her visit with co-host Ben Shephard on today’s show.
‘I did go and see Derek yesterday,’ Kate began. ‘It was quite a tough visit yesterday. He’s had a tough couple of weeks and it’s just frustrating.’
She added that the time she spent with Derek was ‘extra emotional’ because it was the day before their son Billy’s birthday.
‘It’s Billy’s actual birthday today so I think I was extra emotional because you think about the day he was born and Derek’s involvement and how much Derek would like to be present and all of that, so it’s very emotional,’ Kate continued.
‘What the doctor said to me is, “Sometimes Kate, a day when nothing has gone backwards and nothing has gone wrong, is a positive day.”‘
Kate continued: ‘It’s just that I’m desperate for a step forward I think. But it’s always lovely to see him, so it’s wonderful to have the chance to do that.’
Last week, Kate confirmed that Derek is stable and watched Good Morning Britain.
‘He is stable and actually yesterday, I spoke to the nurses and they said they had put Good Morning Britain on, and they felt that because his eyes were open, he looked focused,’ she told audiences.
Kate added: ‘He engaged on it. We don’t know if it’s the movement of the light or familiar voice so, good morning, Derek.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
