Michelle Obama sobbed for 30 minutes after leaving the White House

Michelle Obama has revealed that she cried for half-an-hour straight after leaving the White House with her family for the final time.

The former First Lady opened up about how she felt leaving 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue back in 2017 when her husband Barack Obama’s presidency came to an end and Donald Trump took over as the United States of America’s new leader.

Speaking to Oprah Winfrey in a clip in her new Netflix documentary Becoming, Michelle admitted: ‘There were tears and there was crying.

‘I was trying not to cry because I said if I walk out there crying, they’re going to swear I’m crying for a different reason.

‘It was a very emotional day. But then we got on Air Force One and I got on the plane and I think I sobbed for 30 minutes. I think it was just the release of eight years of trying to do everything perfectly.’

Michelle also disclosed that her daughters Malia and Sasha had their friends to sleepover on their last night in the White House, as they wanted to have one final slap up breakfast.

‘We’re trying to move and I have to get them out like, “You’ve got to move, the Trumps are coming”,’ Michelle said, as she recalled trying to usher everyone out of the house the next morning.

New Netflix documentary Becoming landed on the platform today and is an intimate look into Michelle’s life during a moment of profound change, not only for her personally but for the country she and her husband served over eight impactful years in the White House.

‘The film offers a rare and up-close look at her life, taking viewers behind the scenes as she embarks on a 34-city tour that highlights the power of community to bridge our divides and the spirit of connection that comes when we openly and honestly share our stories,’ teases the synopsis.

Becoming is available to stream on Netflix.
