Power: Is Monet based on a real person? Mary J. Blige opens up

The Powerverse will be expanding with the introduction of spin-offs which will take several of the original characters in different directions. Among the spin-offs is Power Book II: Ghost, which was expected to be airing in the summer, in the slot usually occupied by the original show. However, due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic sending people into lockdown, production was halted on the show – along with the other series in the franchise.

Book II was the first spin-off to be confirmed with some footage already shot from the forthcoming series.

After the Power series finale in February, a trailer for Book II was aired and teased Mary J. Blige as drug dealer Monet.

She stood over a table with bundles of cash in front of her.

The trailer also featured the ethically challenged lawyer Davis Maclean (Cliff “Method Man” Davis) flashing a grin at the camera.

Tariq St Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr) was put to the test while he attended college to get his inheritance fortune.

In prison Tasha St Patrick (Naturi Naughton) looked miserable as she paid the price for her son’s freedom.

Book II picks up the story in the wake of the Power series finale – a mere 72 afterwards.

James “Ghost” St Patrick’s (Omari Hardwick) chapter is over and the focus is now on Monet.

Is Monet based on a real person?

Like all of Power, Monet too is be a fictional character but it’s clear she’s going to strike a chord with audiences when she finally does debut.

Blige told media the Television Critics Association earlier this year: “This is probably going to be the most exciting thing that will happen to me this year and I want to thank Courtney Kemp and 50 Cent for starting this conversation with me.”

The musician and actress continued: “I’ve known so many Tashas, I’ve known so many Ghosts.

“I’ve dated so many Ghosts, I’m a huge fan for life, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it.”

From Blige’s words, the world of Power feels very real to her and her performance could take some elements from reality but not necessarily in an explicit or obvious manner.

The show previously featured some things from real-life with executive producer and Kanan Stark actor Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson suggesting as much.

Power creator Courtney Kemp has also admitted Lela Loren’s FBI attorney Angela Valdes was based on “some of my own mistakes”.

Book II is subtitled Ghost, which seems ironic considering the character is no more.

  • Power theories: Ghost may not be dead as showrunner drops huge clue

However, the inference is Monet is the new Ghost or rather just another Ghost – a slippery drug dealer hustling to make a living.

She could also be trying to go straight and Book II will focus on her own arc towards legitimacy.

Alternatively, Monet could embark on a different journey completely – but given she also has a daughter in the form of Diana (LaToya Tonodeo), she is likely to want a better life for her child than her own upbringing.

Kemp has previously spoken of Monet’s “street acumen” rather than her predecessor Ghost, who plumped for a more Stringer Bell approach to business.

The Power writer told Entertainment Weekly: “For Mary’s character, we use all the power and presence of the actress to communicate how this is a woman who is remarkable and unique in her abilities.

“She’s as smart, savvy, and strategic as Ghost ever was, but her learning doesn’t come from books. We always said Ghost was a bookish kid who read all the time.”
