The fifth season of Queen of the South was postponed by the coronavirus, leaving new fans desperate to find out what happens after the gripping finale was released on Netflix. During the hiatus, the show’s star has revealed how the USA Network series could have panned out had one of her favourite characters survived.

Season four of the thrilling crime drama saw Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) reshaping her cartel operation.

After moving to New Orleans to spread her influence and striking a new deal with the Russians, the season finale saw the shocking return of a major character.

Clutching a fatal bullet wound, Teresa’s ex-boyfriend James (Peter Gadiot) warned the drug mogul of a new threat before the credits rolled.

With the stakes already raised for a fifth season, fans are eagerly awaiting production to continue so season five can kick off with an explosive start.

As well as bringing back James in a surprise twist, Queen of the South’s latest instalment also revealed more about Teresa’s old life with her best friend Brenda (Justina Machado).

Teresa’s life is shattered when she finds Brenda strung up and lifeless in the first season’s gripping finale.

The crushing moment was instrumental in throwing Teresa headfirst into a life of criminal drug trafficking, and she has never looked back since.

However, comments from the series’ star Alice Braga have revealed what could have happened if Brenda had survived the ordeal with the Vargas cartel.

Following the release of season four, Braga took to her personal YouTube channel to answer fans’ questions and heap praise on her former co-star.

She said: “Someone that I deeply miss is Brenda. Justina Machado, I think she is one of the best actresses I’ve ever worked with.

“I’ve always been a fan of her since before the show started. She left the show, Brenda died, but it’s someone that I always think about.”

Although Justina returned for guest appearances in season four’s flashbacks, Brenda was completely absent throughout the second and third instalments.

Had Brenda survived, Braga revealed she and Teresa would have definitely formed a strong partnership over the course of the past four seasons.

She continued: “I think she definitely would have been Teresa’s right-hand person or something like that.

“I don’t think Brenda would ever betray Teresa but there would be a lot of drama in it, I think.”

Despite their strong bond, Brenda was infamous for her brash and unfiltered personality so may have caused issues for her friend’s sensitive drug trafficking.

  • Queen of the South season 4 ending explained: What happened?

Thankfully, Alice Braga got another chance to work with Machado when she was brought back for a revealing flashback episode in season four.

The devastating events of season four may have convinced Teresa it’s better to keep her career and social life separate, most notably the death of Brenda’s son Tony (Julia Silva).

Had Brenda survived the end of season one, the consequences may have been even more brutal as she became more involved in Teresa’s criminal operations.

Queen of the South season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
