Gary Windass (Mikey North) has attempted to turn over a new leaf for the sake of fiancé Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) in Coronation Street, but it appears as if he returns to his life of crime once more in upcoming scenes, as he angrily confronts someone due to repay him a loan.
Gary has evolved quite a bit over the last couple of years. The builder-turned-antique-furniture dealer found himself turning to the dark side, as he began to operate as a loan shark, after learning from sinister Rick Neelan (Greg Wood) — the man he would later go on to kill — how to do so.
He built himself quite the reputation as a money lender, and his newfound power went straight to his head — something which he proved when he left Ryan (Ryan Preston) in a bad way after he failed to repay the debt.
However, Gary was forced to make a choice after his dodgy dealings inadvertently resulted in the death of Robert (Tristan Gemmill) — not to mention Shona (Julia Goulding) being left fighting for her life — as his true nature came to light.
For Maria’s sake, he turned over a new leaf, and thus far he’s managed to keep his promise to her, as he’s been operating above board.
However, in spite of his claims that this chapter of his life is over, it appears as if he returns to his dodgy operations once more, as new images from location filming reveal the loan shark arriving at a woman’s house to collect a debt.
The animosity between Gary and the woman in question is evidently apparent, as she seemingly berates him, but the question remains: will Gary acquire the money he’s after?
What’s more, how will Maria react if she comes to learn that he’s operating as a loan shark once more?
The pair are due to get married — after Gary proposed last month — and recent scenes have demonstrated the couple’s desire to move forward with the ceremony, so will Gary’s dodgy dealings result in the engagement coming to a head?
Speaking to Metro.co.uk about what’s to come in regards to Gary’s storyline, Corrie boss Iain MacLeod said: ‘We can’t forget the on-going trajectory of Gary Windass and his return to his genetic destiny as a kind of slightly dodgy scowl, and that has a really interesting chapter at the start of the new year.’
‘Having ridden the storm that ensures after Christmas, he finds himself in a relatively stable and happy place with Maria, and then something incredibly difficult happens that throws it up in the air, and meanwhile, while the focus is over here on his new family and Maria, Adam Barlow is secretly conspiring against him and will threaten to lead Adam and therefore the authorities to Rick’s final resting place.’
‘Whether that will actually happen or not is still to be seen but ultimately that will precipitate a big explosive story around the time we traditionally do our Britain’s Got Talent strip week. We’re aware that Rick’s body is resting over there, and we are resisting the urge to dig it up as it feels like everyone is expecting us to. So, I hope we’re playing in a good way with the audience’s expectations around that.’
Coronation Street continues Friday 6 March at 7:30pm on ITV.
