Station 19 fans know Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz) and Robert Sullivan’s (Boris Kodjoe) chemistry is undeniable — but are they in it for the long haul? Recently, Andy and Sullivan got married. However, the fourth season finale revealed both parties have plenty on their plate, even without considering their new marriage. So should we be worried about Andy and Sullivan when Station 19 Season 4 returns to ABC? It’s going to be an uphill battle.
When did Andy Herrera and Robert Sullivan get married in ‘Station 19’?
Andy and Sullivan got married in Station 19 Season 3 Episode 12, which is titled “I’ll Be Seeing You.” Fans watched a series of flashbacks sprinkled throughout the episode. Then at one point, the couple discussed the possibility of marriage. Sullivan wanted to tie the knot. Meanwhile, Andy didn’t want to get married to “check a box on an HR form.”
Nevertheless, Sullivan reassured his partner he wanted to get married for the right reasons. He just wanted Andy to be his wife. Later, viewers found Andy waiting for her father, Pruitt Herrera (Miguel Sandoval), in city hall. But as expected, Pruitt wasn’t sure why they were rushing into marriage.
Andy explained Sullivan helped her come to terms with Pruitt’s decision not to get treatment for his cancer. She also shared her true feelings toward Sullivan. Then Andy told her father she wanted him there to witness the nuptials. So Pruitt walked Andy down the aisle and watched as his daughter married Sullivan.
Why ‘Station 19’ fans are worried about Andy Herrera and Robert Sullivan’s relationship
For those of you who don’t know, Station 19 Season 3 Episode 12 highlighted Andy and Sullivan’s wedding as well as Pruitt’s death. In the present day, some members of the A-team were trapped inside a building. They were suffocating due to the lack of oxygen. So when Pruitt arrived at the scene, he broke a hole in the roof for ventilation. But then the roof collapsed, taking Pruitt.
In the next few episodes, Andy began to unravel. Her father’s death shook her and she started to have flashbacks from her childhood. Ultimately, she remembered her parents didn’t get along and grew suspicious of Pruitt. Then in the finale, Andy wondered whether her mother killed herself. But at the end of the episode, Andy discovered her mom is very much alive.
Meanwhile, Sullivan came clean about his drug use to the Civil Service Commission. He was suspended. Then in the finale, Sullivan received surgery for his chronic leg pain. Grey’s Anatomy’s Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) was his doctor and explained he needed a support system after his surgery. She questioned whether Andy would be able to handle it. Amelia was also worried Sullivan might relapse.
Later, Sullivan woke up from his surgery. But at the time, Andy was also uncovering the truth about her mother. So Sullivan emerged from his slumber all alone — and in pain. He called out for morphine and received it.
What the ‘Station 19’ team says about Andy Herrera and Robert Sullivan for season 4
Clearly, both Andy and Sullivan have plenty going on ahead of Station 19 Season 4. But what does this mean for the couple’s relationship? As things are, both parties are so consumed by their own struggles that they may not be capable of taking care of one another. Meanwhile, it seems the Station 19 team believes Andy and Sullivan rushed into their marriage.
“I think Andy married Sullivan more for her dad than for herself,” Ortiz told Entertainment Weekly in May 2020. “I know that she’s definitely in love with him, but I also think she was feeling lost when it all happened. Her dad died knowing that she found love. But getting married for someone else doesn’t create a solid foundation for the relationship.”
She continued: “They haven’t had the time to really get to know each other and grow together as a couple. Plus, you throw in his drug addiction issues, his surgery, and Andy dealing with her grief and where does that leave us?”
That said, Ortiz hinted there is hope for Andy and Sullivan moving forward. “I don’t think Andy needs to get with any more guys, she’s done her rounds already,” Ortiz said. “There’s been a lot of jumping around with everyone. But hey, it’s Shondaland and what’s great about it is that there’s nothing wrong with female empowerment and owning our sexuality.”
Meanwhile, Vernoff echoed Ortiz’s remarks about Andy and Sullivan on Station 19, confirming there’s hope for the couple in an interview with Deadline. “It’s worrisome any time anybody dives into anything as quickly and in as much trauma bonding as they did,” the showrunner said. “That doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. It doesn’t mean there’s not hope for the marriage.”
But even so, Andy and Sullivan will have to work hard for their relationship when Station 19 returns for its fourth season. “I do think that it’s an uphill climb,” Vernoff said. “Love isn’t always enough to sustain a relationship, and Andy’s going through a lot and Sullivan’s going through a lot.”
