Strictly Come Dancing: Former star hints at return to BBC show ‘I’ve never done that’

Denise van Outen is one of the coveted alumni to feature in the Strictly Come Dancing hall of fame, having taken part in the show almost eight years ago. The theatre star has recently demonstrated her vocal abilities on The Masked Singer, but it seems dancing is where her heart lies. In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, the former BBC dance show contestant revealed she would love to return, but not as you’d expect.

Back in 2012, Denise was partnered with former professional, James Jordan, 41, and won over the judges week-on-week.

There was some controversy over her appearance on the show, with many viewers claiming she had an advantage because of her theatre background.

However, the actress defied the critics and made it all the way to the final but was beaten to the pole position by Olympic gymnast, Louis Smith, 30, and Flavia Cacace, 39.

With a trophy yet to be won but having taken part as a contestant on the main programme already, the former star has hinted at another way she can make a comeback.

Speaking with Express.co.uk, Denise said: “I’d like to do a Christmas special at some point. That would be nice.

“I’ve never done the Christmas special but I’d like to dance again,” she explained, teasing a return to the show.

“You never know,” she concluded, so could the theatre performer get a chance to win the Silver Star Trophy as part of this year’s festive line-up?

Over the years, the Yuletide instalment has always given past contestants the opportunity to strut their stuff on the dance floor once again.

Although some champions of the regular series have seen their titles untarnished with a comeback, others have trumped their previous endeavours.

The most recent Christmas special saw 2017 runner-up Debbie McGee, 61, take the crown after missing out on the pole position on the main show.

Could Denise follow in her footsteps and find herself with a win under her belt if she were to sign up for the festive special?

Viewers and fans alike will have to wait until later this year to discover which famous faces will be making a comeback.

Another former contestant supposedly making a bidding for the festive special is none other than television judge, Robert Rinder, 41.

The latter took part in the regular series back in 2016 where he competed alongside professional Oksana Platero, 31.

He just missed out on the final, being eliminated in week 11, placing him in fifth position.

If he were to make a comeback, it seems the judge is setting his sights on being one half of the first same-sex couple to compete on the show.

Speaking to OK! Magazine, the television personality said: “I was offered next year’s Christmas special with a same-sex dancer.

“I’d do anything. I’ve danced on stage with Anton Du Beke for a Grenfell Tower benefit,” Robert explained.

With the Christmas special still months away, fans will be eagerly guessing who could be signing up for this year’s main series line-up.

The rumour mill is already in overdrive on who could be sealing the detail, but it will be months yet before the official cast list is unveiled.

Strictly Come Dancing returns later this year on BBC One.
