SPACE fantasy TV series The Mandalorian has reportedly added a fan-favourite Jedi Knight to the cast.
Actress Rosario Dawson has reportedly been hired for season 2 of the Disney+ show, the first series of which drops in the UK on March 24.
Dawson, 40, will play a live-action version of Ahsoka Tano, who up to now as only been seen in the Star Wars cartoon productions.
Tano made her debut in the 2008 animated movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars, before becoming a much-loved main character on the TV show of the same name.
Fans of the franchise have been demanding Dawson play the Jedi padawan for five years.
In 2017, a fan asked Dawson on Twitter to star as Tano, and the actress and singer replied: “Ummmm… yes, please?! #AhsokaLives”.
On Good Morning America, Dawson said it “would be amazing” to be cast as Tano.
Tano has a leading role in Star Wars: The Clone Wars as the padawan of Anakin Skywalker, who leaves the Jedi Order to fight the Empire.
The series opens before the emergence of the First Order, after Mado (played by Pedro Pascal) explores the limits of the galaxy.
Tano is from the alien species Togruta, recognisable by their large montrals, which are sensory organs sprouting from their heads.
The character of Tano was co-created by George Lucas and Dave Filoni, who has directed two episodes of season 1 of The Mandalorian.
The Mandalorian is the first live action series in the Star Wars franchise.
Set five years after the events of Return of the Jedi and 25 years prior to the events of The Force Awakens, it follows the title character, the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin, and his exploits beyond the reaches of the New Republic.
Disney+ recently revealed The Mandalorian release schedule, but it might not be welcomed by coronavirus self-isolators.
The Star Wars TV series will be dropping just two episodes at launch.
This will be followed by the remaining episodes on a weekly basis, meaning they won’t be available to binge watch.
The anticipation for the series has been built up for months, with the initial debut coming on March 24
American viewers have had the series for a few months now, since Disney+ was launched in the US last year.
Despite all eight episodes being available stateside, they won't be available to watch for UK viewers straight away as Disney+ aren’t taking on the model of their biggest streaming competition: Netflix.
The new episodes will be available to watch every Friday from 8am, along with other Disney+ originals such as High School Musical: The Series and The World According to Jeff Goldblum.
However, at least two episodes will be released initially, which wasn't the case for American viewers.
The two episodes will be swiftly followed by a third on Friday, March 27, setting it up for a weekly Friday release schedule.
Disney+ has recently announced that Frozen 2 will be released early in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The countries that will receive the early release include Canada, The Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand.
It was originally scheduled to be released at the end of June.
The Mandalorian episodes 1 and 2 debut on Disney+ on Tuesday 24th March, followed by weekly releases on Fridays.
