During Monday’s University Challenge, BBC host Jeremy Paxman welcomed back two more teams of students to compete in the quarter-finals. Two teams of four students from Edinburgh University and Trinity College Cambridge had to battle it out in a bid to make it to the next round. However, during one quickfire question round, Jeremy jokingly snapped at one team when they buzzed in to answer their first question.

Jeremy began the show by introducing the teams to viewers. He explained the University of Edinburgh achieved the highest score of the series in their first match.

While he pointed out Trinity College Cambridge beat Durham University in their first round.

“The rules are the same as ever,” the host explained to the teams. “10 points for starter questions, 15 for bonuses.

“Starter questions you have to answer on your own but bonuses you can answer through your captain.”

Edinburgh didn’t give poor Trinity Cambridge much of a chance as they stormed through each round.

Edinburgh managed to score an impressive 80 points in the first half of the programme, while Trinity Cambridge failed to score any points.

However, Jeremy couldn’t resist taking a cheeky swipe at Trinity Cambridge after they finally buzzed in to answer a science question.

“The essay on the six-cornered snowflake was by which scientist born in 1571?” Jeremy asked.

Kim was quick to press his buzzer as he answered: “Kepler.”

“Kepler is correct, yes,” Jeremy replied before harshly critiquing: “You’re awake. Good!”

Luckily, the team found the presenter’s comment funny as they laughed after scoring 10 points for their team.

Trinity Cambridge then got the chance to answer a number of bonus questions, increasing their score to 25.

The host’s comment didn’t go unnoticed by viewers either, with many taking to social media to share their thoughts.

This is the Way tweeted: “You’re awake! Ouch.”

“They are awake,” Carl joked as Jamie simply penned: “I love you, Jeremy Paxman.”

However, despite their best efforts, it wasn’t enough for Trinity Cambridge to overtake their opponents.

“I bet you are kicking yourselves,” Jeremy said to Trinity Cambridge after only scoring 95 points by the end of the show.

“If you’re going to stay in the competition you’re going to have to win next time and win again.

“Edinburgh congratulations to you, you’re going to have to come back and win again.”

University Challenge returns on Monday at 8.30pm on BBC Two.
