Mayor de Blasio delivered bad news to prospective newlyweds Friday, saying the city’s marriage bureau in Lower Manhattan will be closed under further notice as the Big Apple deals with the coronavirus pandemic.
“The marriage bureau is closed as of today,“ Hizzoner announced on WNYC radio’s “The Brian Lehrer Show,” minutes after a caller asked about the office’s status.
However, de Blasio pointed out that “further notice” means when the city “comes out of the crisis, which on the trajectory we are on is many weeks away.”
“This is going to get a lot worse in April, and I am worried about whether May can be worse than that, so this is going to be a real battle,” said de Blasio.
The move to shut the office is part of the city’s plan to institute social distancing and prevent large crowds from gathering.
