DOC employee is the first NYC worker to die from coronavirus

A 56-year-old employee with the city Department of Correction has died from the coronavirus — the first New York City worker to be killed by the bug.

The male investigator died Sunday evening at a local hospital, DOC Commissioner Cynthia Brann said.

“This person was an investigator and had limited contact with people in custody,” Brann said. “We are heartbroken and send our deepest condolences to our colleague’s family, loved ones, and co-workers.”

The news of the investigator’s death comes a day after the DOC confirmed he contracted COVID-19, becoming the first case of infection in the city correctional system.

It was unclear if the employee had any underlying health issues.

Another employee who was in contact with the civilian staffer who tested positive had been ordered to self-quarantine.

“As we endure this loss to our community, we will continue to do everything to keep our facilities safe for everyone,” Brann said. “Consistent with CDC and DOHMH guidance, anyone who was in close contact with this individual has been notified and appropriate precautions taken.”
