Germany has banned gatherings of more than two people in a nationwide crackdown in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus. 

The premier of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet, said that family members will be exempt from the rule as he made the announcement at a news conference today.   

Chancellor Angela Merkel made the agreement with regional leaders today while in discussions over how to contain the virus, which has infected almost 22,000 people and killed 70 in Germany. 

She claims she is against a rigid lockdown because she fears that it could backfire.
