but the huge surge of electricity had blown plug sockets off the wall and shattered a lamp.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In all, flooding and landslips affected 11 roads across Devon including the M5 which had to be temporarily closed for a short time.<\/p>\n<p>There was also flash flooding affecting roads in Somerset, including Taunton town centre.<\/p>\n<p>By late afternoon, officially the wettest place was Harberton Farm, near Totnes, which recorded 84mm (3.3ins).<\/p>\n<p>But the Met Office said some private rain gauges had recorded over 100mm (4ins) of rain and totals for yesterday were expected to end up at 70-90mm (2..8 &#8211; 3.6ins) in areas of Devon and Somerset.<\/p>\n<p>The Met Office added there have been approximately 1500-2000 lightning strikes across the UK today, most of which have been in southern counties of England, and some of these where over the English Channel.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Vautrey, a meteorologist with the Meteorological Office, said: &#8216;Some places could have potentially 70 per cent of the average September rain over the course of a few days as the weather system marches through.&#8217; Mr Vautrey said the worst of the weather is likely to be in the west, with spells of wet and windy conditions.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8216;The 28C we saw in London on Saturday is the last breath of summer.. It was the first time since 1911 that the UK&#8217;s maximum temperature exceeded 30C (86F) for more than three days.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy rain brought torrential downpours across the south-west of England this morning, with localised flooding in south Devon.<\/p>\n<p>Areas affected by the amber warning are likely to be flooded and people should expect some disruption to travel.<\/p>\n<p>In some parts of southern England, the Met Office predicted that 30-40mm of rain could fall &#8211; volumes equivalent to at least half the September average of 55-60mm.<\/p>\n<p>Homes and businesses could be in danger of flooding quickly in the downpours, although the risk is said to be low, the Met Office said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is also a &#8216;slight chance&#8217; of power cuts or that other services to homes and businesses could be lost, while some communities could also be cut off by floodwater, the forecaster added.<\/p>\n<p>The Met Office said buildings could also be damaged by lightning, hail or strong winds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>People planning to travel face the prospect of delays or sudden cancellations to trains and buses.<\/p>\n<p>Roads may be closed at short notice due to spray and sudden floods and &#8216;difficult driving conditions&#8217; are expected on those that remain open.<\/p>\n<p>Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said\u00a0&#8216;there is a chance these thunderstorms turn severe&#8217; and bring &#8216;gusty winds with quite significant torrential rain&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/17\/17\/75530281-12528343-People_in_London_shielded_themselves_from_the_rain_with_umbrella-a-1_1694966649505.jpg\" height=\"425\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>People in London shielded themselves from the rain with umbrellas as they walked across the Jubilee Bridge<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/17\/16\/75529633-12528343-image-a-25_1694964030453.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Beachgoers enjoyed a dreary day at Durdle Door following the recent spate of warm weather<\/p>\n<p>They will move relatively quickly, making it difficult to pin down where exactly will be worst affected, Mr Vautrey said.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8216;It is certainly worth keeping up to date with the forecast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Although the warning area covers the whole south east of England, not everywhere in that region may see the most severe thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It is worth checking those things immediately before you head out on your journey so that you are aware where the most severe thunderstorms are possible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Make sure you are taking care as the weather could change at very short lead times, and just be prepared for those gusty winds and potentially large hailstorms.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Conditions are expected to remain &#8216;blustery at times&#8217; early next week but are likely to be fresher.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/17\/16\/75530291-12528343-image-a-34_1694964581085.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The beach at Durdle Door looked dreary amid an overcast sky and wet, rainy weather<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/17\/13\/wire-75526849-1694952271-572_634x422.jpg\" height=\"422\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>A lightning storm hits Blyth on the Northumberland coast (Owen Humphreys\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>More storms are possible as the remnants of Hurricane Lee, which hit New England in the US and eastern Canada, is set to move across the UK between Tuesday and Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>It will no longer be a hurricane by the time it reaches UK shores.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Vautrey said: &#8216;That will be getting picked up by the jet stream. Showers in places could be heavy with a risk of further thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It could be quite an unsettled, autumnal week to come.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow will see further wet and windy weather, with northern England seeing the heaviest rain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>On Tuesday and Wednesday the weather will remain wet but some areas in the south will see drier spells.
