Melanie Salinas.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot&#8217;s name has not been released.\u00a0On Monday afternoon, the military said debris from the plane had been found.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/19\/00\/75575415-12532685-image-a-5_1695079570511.jpg\" height=\"473\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/18\/13\/75554261-12530467-image-a-25_1695039356651.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>A Marine Corps pilot safely ejected from a F-35 Lightning II jet over North Charleston on Sunday but his aircraft was not located until Monday afternoon<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/19\/00\/75575151-12532685-image-a-28_1695078779661.jpg\" height=\"898\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Personnel from Joint Base Charleston and @MCASBeaufortSC, in close coordination with local authorities, have located a debris field in Williamsburg County,&#8217; the base wrote on X.\u00a0&#8216;The debris was discovered two hours northeast of JB Charleston.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Members of the community should avoid the area as the recovery team secures the debris field. We are transferring incident command to the USMC this evening, as they begin the recovery process.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Marine Corps Commandant Eric Smith issued a two-day stand-down for all aviation units both inside and outside of the United States that will take place at some point this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No units will be allowed to fly until they have a two-day discussion about safety measures and procedures, according to an email seen by ABC News.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the missing plane&#8217;s location and trajectory, the search for the F-35 Lightning II jet was focused on Lake Moultrie, around 50 miles from North Charleston, said Senior Master Sgt. Heather Stanton at Joint Base Charleston.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The pilot enabled the autopilot function prior to his ejection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/18\/09\/75548803-12530467-image-a-1_1695026077874.jpg\" height=\"532\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Many were poking fun at the situation online, with social media users expressing disbelief the military can&#8217;t find such an expensive piece of military equipment.<\/p>\n<p>X, formerly Twitter, has been filled with memes mocking the military and the Biden administration over the embarrassing incident.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Huggins, spokesperson for Joint Base Charleston said that for an unknown reason, the F-35&#8217;s transponder isn&#8217;t working.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Huggins said: &#8216;That&#8217;s why we put out the public request for help.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The jets are designed to be undetectable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The aircraft is stealth, so it has different coatings and different designs that make it more difficult than a normal aircraft to detect,&#8217; Huggins told the Washington Post.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A South Carolina Law Enforcement Division helicopter joined the search for the F-35 after some bad weather cleared in the area, Stanton said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Military officials appealed in online posts Sunday for any help from the public in locating the aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Officials are still investigating why the pilot ejected, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot of a second F-35 returned safely to Joint Base Charleston, Salinas said.<\/p>\n<p>Local congresswoman, Rep. Nancy Mace,\u00a0tweeted: &#8216;How in the hell do you lose an F-35? How is there not a tracking device and we&#8217;re asking the public to what, find a jet and turn it in?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/09\/18\/23\/75548371-12532685-Lake_Moultrie_in_South_Carolina_where_the_search_is_concentrated-a-17_1695075582393.jpg\" height=\"441\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Lake Moultrie in South Carolina, where the search was concentrated, is around 75 feet at its deepest point\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The planes and pilots were with the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 based in Beaufort, not far from South Carolina&#8217;s Atlantic coast.<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force regards accidents that &#8216;results in death, injury, illness or property damage&#8217; to be a &#8216;mishap,&#8217; reports the Washington Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the first ever F-35 crash in 2018, that accident was referred to as a &#8216;Class A&#8217; mishap, meaning more than $2 million worth of damage was accrued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In October last year, an F-35 jet crashed and exploded in flames at the end of a runway in Salt Lake City after the pilot ejected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the crash, the Hill Air Force Base said it was carrying out the &#8216;first of its kin F-35 recovery course&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The training covered how to handle different scenarios safely and effectively, such as a collapsed nose gear, pilot extraction and aircraft hoisting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This training is invaluable for not only our U.S. military, but also for our partner countries who operate the F-35,&#8217; Master Sgt. where the pilot took off from in the most recent incident &#8211; is about 35 miles south west of Charleston and is home to several units of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing including the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 which flies F-35B Lightning IIs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>About 4,700 military personnel serve at the<span>\u00a06,900 acre site which uses a large air-to-air combat area off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia, along with an\u00a0air-to-ground combat and bombing range in Georgia&#8217;s McIntosh County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It was home to a\u00a0heavily-decorated Marine Corps pilot who died last month\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>when his\u00a0combat jet crashed\u00a0near a San Diego base during a training flight.<\/p>\n<p>Major Andrew Mettler was piloting an F\/A-18D Hornet when it went down at just before midnight on August 24 near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.<\/p>\n<p>That crash was the fifth Class-A aviation mishap &#8211;
