BBC Breakfast fans have asked producers of the show to make a guest a permanent feature after he was branded a "delight".

Hacker the Dog is a mainstay within the BBC's children's service CBBC, regularly featuring with co-host Lauren Layfield.

He appeared on Tuesday's edition of BBC Breakfast (September 26) as the broadcaster launched the 500 Words competition for young writers.

The initiative sets younger schoolchildren spark their imaginations by writing a 500-word short story, with the finalists being invited to meet Queen Consort Camilla.

But Hacker provided viewers with a slew of hilarious comments as he brightened up the segment with his off-the-cuff sarcastic comments.

In one blurt, whilst host Jon Kay was enticing children to get their thinking caps on for stories, Hacker was quick to get involved.

Kay explained that in addition to meeting Queen Camilla, the winner of the competition would win the Queen's height in books.

Jon joked that Sir Lenny Henry – who read out the official call for entries on behalf of the Queen – should be the one to base the height of books from.

At which point, Hacker immediately burst out in his brash fashion: "He's tall our Lenny, he's a tall old man!"

Later on in the show, Hacker said that if he wrote a story, he would write about meeting sporting legend Sue Barker.

When Jon said that anyone's dreams can come true, the dog quipped back: "No, they don't because she has a restraining order against me", leaving Jon in fits of laughter.

And it was clear that fans were won over by his cheeky personality, with many asking bosses to make the puppet character a permanent host.

One user took to Twitter to write: "We need Hacker on every BBC Breakfast show starting with today's. He’s an absolute delight."

A second viewer agreed, commenting: "Might start a petition so Hacker T Dog can be a permanent presenter."

But a third fan was less enthusiastic with his inclusion on the show as they said: "That puppet is making me teeth itch, Hacker."
