Male singers boost their vocals when they spot women in the audience, study finds<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Study also found that an operatic-style technique is more popular with women<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Experts think this shows men have a flexible, controlled voice so seem healthier<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Crickets and frogs are known to try to out-chirp or out-croak each other in an effort to win the attention of females.<\/p>\n<p>But it turns out the same might be true of humans.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because new research suggests that male choristers boost their vocals when they spot women in the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Recordings of an elite boys&#8217; choir once directed by Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig, Germany, were analysed by experts\u00a0at Aarhus University in Denmark, as well as institutes in Australia, Italy\u00a0and Germany.<\/p>\n<p>They found that the\u00a0<span>more physically mature boys in the group sang with greater gusto when girls were watching, as opposed to when the audience was made up solely of males.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/08\/11\/77551287-12724283-New_research_suggests_that_male_choristers_boost_their_vocals_wh-m-9_1699443491990.jpg\" height=\"437\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>New research suggests that male choristers boost their vocals when they spot women in the audience. Pictured: Italian operatic tenor, Luciano Pavarotti<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/08\/11\/77550733-12724283-Higher_energy_The_older_choristers_changed_the_way_they_sang_to_-a-4_1699442937219.jpg\" height=\"539\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Higher energy: The older choristers changed the way they sang to &#8216;add an attractive ringing quality to the voice&#8217;, the researchers said (pictured), which is similar to how frogs and crickets behave when courting<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE: HOW A LITTLE SOFT SINGING CAN BOOST YOUR BLOOMS<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/08\/11\/76290889-12724283-During_the_study_the_song_The_Purple_Butterfly_by_Bandari_was_pl-a-5_1699442937220.jpg\" height=\"182\" width=\"274\"><\/p>\n<p>During the study, the song The Purple Butterfly by Bandari was played to duckweed, a common pond weed that is used as a high protein animal feed\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>The older choristers changed the way they sang to &#8216;add an attractive ringing quality to the voice&#8217;, the researchers said, which is similar to how frogs and crickets behave when courting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The creatures use a technique known as collective broadcast, which involves working together to co-ordinate their chirps and croaks in a chorus to attract females.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Once they arrive, the males then compete with each other in the croaking and chirping stakes to be seen as the most desirable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The experts involved in the new study think that a similar group singing approach may have evolved in humans\u00a0as a way for men to work together to attract females, before they too competed to project their voices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t mean singing more loudly \u2013 because that would destroy the harmony in the choir \u2013 but rather with greater clarity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The end result is a brilliant ringing quality to the voice which makes it carry further&#8217;, said lead author Dr Peter Keller.<\/p>\n<p>It is also evidence that cooperation and competitiveness can exist alongside each other, the researchers added, in that the group of singers are working together to attract females but also trying to make themselves the most appealing to a prospective mate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Human chorusing is a flexible form of social communicative behaviour that allows simultaneous group cohesion and sexually motivated competition,&#8217; they said.<\/p>\n<p>The findings could also help to explain why Pavarotti was such a ladies man.<\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, the combination of low-pitched voices in the high-frequency band of the vocal spectrum \u2013 known as the &#8216;singer&#8217;s formant&#8217; \u2013 makes a person&#8217;s voice sound more attractive<span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The reason, Dr Keller explains, is that &#8216;low pitched voices are perceived to be dominant, powerful, and attractive&#8217;, while human hearing is particularly sensitive to frequencies in the singer&#8217;s formant range.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/08\/11\/77550731-12724283-Not_only_that_but_although_Pavarotti_may_not_strike_many_people_-a-6_1699442937221.jpg\" height=\"332\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The findings could also help to explain why Pavarotti was such a ladies man.
