Pregnant Brazilian journalist Elaine da Silva and her baby died Tuesday after a battle with pneumonia.<\/p>\n
The 38-year-old was 23 weeks pregnant and was hospitalized in S\u00e3o Paulo on Monday morning due to respiratory issues, according to her employer, Catholic television network Can\u00e7ao Nova.<\/p>\n
Da Silva leaves behind her husband, Fernando Carvalho, and one-year-old son, Leo.<\/p>\n
‘She always had a smile to offer. She loved life, her family, Our Lady of Aparecida, nature, animals,’ network colleague Reinaldo C\u00e9sar told online news magazine, Revista Quem. ‘She was passionate about journalism. She always brought a look of hope.’<\/p>\n

Da Silva’s death comes three years after she suffered a miscarriage just five weeks into her pregnancy.<\/p>\n
She and her husband were expecting their first child, a boy, and she was rushed to the hospital after she bled and her water broke, Can\u00e7ao Nova cameraman Ederaldo Paulini told the magazine.<\/p>\n
Da Silva underwent an emergency cesarean section, but the child died.<\/p>\n
‘They didn’t know the sex, she had to see the baby, she saw that it was a boy and they named him Theo,’ Paulini said. ‘At the time, she was very shaken and cried in secret.’<\/p>\n
The couple were planning on naming their second son, Rafael.<\/p>\n
Da Silva was employed by Can\u00e7ao Nova for 15 years and anchored the network’s evening news, Can\u00e7ao Nova Noticias.<\/p>\n

‘We are all very sad this morning. We have just received the news of the death of our beloved Elaine,’ Can\u00e7\u00e3o Nova news presenter Paula Guimar\u00e3es said. ‘(She) became spectacular in what she did.’<\/p>\n
V\u00edctor Freitas, a reporter for Rede S\u00e9culo 21 television, lamented da Silva’s sudden death.<\/p>\n
‘One of the best friends journalism gave me,’ he said in an Instagram post. ‘She encouraged my work from our first contact. Always kind and cheerful. May God welcome you with open arms and comfort your family.’<\/p>\n
