A COUNCIL will not light Hanukkah candles this year over concerns they could be vandalised.<\/strong><\/p>\n Havering council in East London has said it would be \u201cunwise\u201d for the menorah, a nine-branched candelabrum lit during the eight-day \u00adJewish holiday, to be installed outside the town hall in Romford.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Officials said going ahead could \u201crisk further inflaming tensions within our communities\u201d.<\/p>\n It will still mark the beginning of the religious festival on December 7 with a \u201ctemporary instillation and event\u201d.<\/p>\n Bosses called accusations of antisemitism \u201ccategorically untrue\u201d.<\/p>\n The council said: \u201cIn light of escalating tensions from the conflict in the Middle East, installing the candelabra now will not be without risk to the council, our partners, staff and local residents.<\/p>\nRead More on UK News<\/h2>\n
