Unfortunately, breathing less isn&#8217;t one of them (stock image)\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Composition of exhaled human breath\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>&#8211; <span>Nitrogen (N)\u00a0<\/span>&#8211; 78%<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <span>Oxygen (O2)<\/span>* &#8211; 17%<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <span>Carbon dioxide (CO2)<\/span>\u00a0&#8211; 4%<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Other gases including\u00a0<span>methane (CH4)<\/span> and <span>nitrous oxide (N2O)<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 1%<\/p>\n<p>*Exhaled human breath contains oxygen, but just less oxygen than the air we inhaled<\/p>\n<p>The new study was led by\u00a0Dr Nicholas Cowan, an atmospheric physicist at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Edinburgh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Exhaled human breath can contain small, elevated concentrations of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), both of which contribute to global warming,&#8217; Dr\u00a0Cowan and colleagues say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We would urge caution in the assumption that emissions from humans are negligible.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>As most of us remember from science classes at school, humans breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When we inhale, air enters the lungs, and oxygen from that air moves to the blood, while\u00a0carbon dioxide (CO2), a waste gas, moves from the blood to the lungs and is breathed out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With plants, it is the other way round; plants use CO2 to create oxygen as a by-product (the process known as photosynthesis).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Every person breathes out CO2 when they exhale, but in their new study, the researchers focused on methane and nitrous oxide.<\/p>\n<p>These two are both powerful greenhouse gases, but because they&#8217;re breathed out in much smaller quantities, their contribution to global warming may have been overlooked.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/13\/13\/78913605-12859057-image-a-4_1702474253575.jpg\" height=\"634\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>When we inhale, air enters the lungs, and oxygen from that air moves to the blood, while CO2, a waste gas, moves from the blood to the lungs and is breathed out<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE\u00a0One BILLION people will die from climate change by 2100, study claims<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/20\/08\/74914363-12768989-Potential_causes_of_death_due_to_climate_change_include_crop_fai-a-39_1700468408272.jpg\" height=\"149\" width=\"274\"><\/p>\n<p>Potential causes of death due to climate change include flooding, extreme weather, wildfires. Pictured, a bushfire in Australia\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, plants essentially soak up all the CO2 that&#8217;s emitted in human breath, so &#8216;CO2 contribution in human breath to climate change is essentially zero,&#8217; Dr\u00a0Cowan told MailOnline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The same cannot be said for\u00a0methane and nitrous oxide, as plants don&#8217;t use these gases in\u00a0photosynthesis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the study, the researchers investigated emissions of methane and nitrous oxide in human breath from 104 adult volunteers from the UK population.<\/p>\n<p>Participants were required to take in a deep breath and hold it for five seconds, then exhale into a sealable plastic bag.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 328 breath samples were collected and every participant had details recorded such as age, sex and dietary preference.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After analysing the samples, researchers found nitrous oxide was emitted by every participant, but methane was found in the breath of only 31 per cent of participants.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers say those who do not exhale methane in their breath are still likely to &#8216;release the gas in flatus&#8217; \u2013 in other words, by farting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, people with methane in their exhaled breath were more likely to be female and above the age of 30, but researchers aren&#8217;t sure why.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Concentrations of the two gases in the overall samples let the researchers estimate the proportion of the UK&#8217;s emissions are from our breath \u2013 0.05 per cent for methane and 0.1 per cent for nitrous oxide.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Cowan stresses that each of these percentages relate specifically to these respective gases, not all of the UK&#8217;s greenhouse gas emissions as a whole.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Researchers didn&#8217;t manage to find any link between gases in the breath and diets \u2013 although meat eaters are known to fuel the climate crisis in other ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The experts stress that their study only looked at greenhouse gases in breath, and so it does not provide an overall estimate of a person&#8217;s emissions footprint.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/13\/12\/78909909-12859057-image-a-1_1702470896136.jpg\" height=\"550\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>In experiments, all participants breathed out carbon dioxide (left). as they&#8217;re considered negligible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, further study of human emissions of these gases &#8211; not just from our breath &#8211; could reveal more about &#8216;the impacts of an ageing population and shifting diets,&#8217; the team say.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the human body, methane gas is produced by microorganisms called methanogens, which colonise our digestive tract.<\/p>\n<p>The methane crosses into the blood and is carried to the lungs where it can be exhaled in breath.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, bacteria in the gut and oral cavity turns\u00a0nitrates in food and water to\u00a0nitrous oxide, which also escapes in human breath.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study has been published in the journal\u00a0PLOS One.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>How do greenhouse gases like methane and CO2 warm up the planet?<\/h3>\n<p>Methane is\u00a0a colourless, odourless flammable gas, and the main constituent of natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>Methane is a greenhouse gas, and the second biggest cause of climate change after carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n<p>Both gases trap heat in the atmosphere, similar to the glass roof of a greenhouse.<\/p>\n<p>During the day, the sun shines through the atmosphere and Earth&#8217;s surface warms up in the sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>At night, the Earth&#8217;s surface cools, releasing heat back into the air, but some of the heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Too much of these gases can cause Earth&#8217;s atmosphere to trap more and more heat, causing the planet to warm up.<\/p>\n<p>Methane has more than 80 times the heat-trapping potency of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after it reaches the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>However this does decrease over time, as it breaks down over the course of about a decade.<\/p>\n<p>It is emitted during the production and transport of coal, natural gas and oil, as well as from livestock and decaying organic waste at landfill sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-12859057\/Now-scientists-say-BREATHING-bad-environment-Gases-exhale-contribute-0-1-UKs-greenhouse-gas-emissions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now scientists say BREATHING is bad for the environment: Gases we exhale contribute to 0.1% of the UK&#8217;s greenhouse gas emissions Two greenhouse gases &#8211;
