BBC Breakfast presenter Charlie Stayt was accused of giving Sam Ryder “a rough ride” during his interview on the show today as he promoted his Christmas single You’re Christmas To Me. The singer spoke to Charlie and Naga Munchetty from the BBC Radio 1 studio alongside Greg James ahead of their pair’s performance together on the latter’s show.
As he promoted his single, Sam, 34, said he understood that people may think “all new Christmas songs are rubbish” but believed he had a number one hit on his hands. “It’s not often you find yourself in a chart race with the almighty Wham!,” he shared. “But, with massive respect to those absolute legends, there’s always room for new music and new artists coming through.”
In response, Charlie said he was one of those who believes “the best ones are the old ones” adding: “If I’m honest with you Sam and no disrepect to your single, I’m a bit like that, ‘Oh what about a bit of Bill Crosby’, there’s all those ones, you’re up against it in a way.”
Sam agreed with the host’s latter comment, but joked “stranger things have happened” and went on to say his new song had taken on “a life of its own”. Towards the end of the interview, Charlie also said he was “disappointed” with the lack of decorations in the BBC Radio 1 studio and the fact Sam wasn’t wearing a Christmas jumper.
The presenter’s comment prompted Greg to step back into the shot and showcase his sprout-emblazoned suit and tie which prompted Charlie to say he had “outdressed” Sam. During his show later on Radio 1, Greg reflected on the interview and insisted the BBC Breakfast host was harsh towards the singer.

Speaking to Sam in the studio live on-air, he said: “They gave you a bit of a rough ride on BBC Breakfast this morning didn’t they?”
“Oh Gosh, yeah,” Sam agreed.
Mimicking Charlie’s comment, Greg added: “‘I prefer the old ones’, Alright mate b****y hell.
“I wanted to chip in and go, ‘You know all the old ones were new at one point’.”

Sam had another awkward moment with Charlie back in May when the pair had a one-on-one interview to discuss Eurovision.
The chat got off to a good start and the presenter went on to challenge him to belt out Let It Be by The Beatles, to which he willingly proceeded.
Much to Charlie’s surprise however, Sam encouraged him to join in midway through and next thing he knew, he found himself in a duet. At the end of the short singalong, Charlie said: “I really wasn’t expecting that.”
He then awkwardly missed Sam’s fist pump as the singer wanted to praise him for his vocals.

“You’ve got to give me one of these, come on,” Sam said, as he tried the hand gesture again.
After Charlie finally fist pumped him back, the singer said: “You really didn’t want to do that more than you didn’t want to sing Let It Be.”
The presenter added: “I’ve interviewed a lot of music stars and a lot of them are reluctant to sing just in the moment and you just go for it.”
BBC Breakast airs daily on BBC One from 6am.
