Greta Gerwig receives FIRST Best Director Golden Globe nomination for Barbie… after being snubbed for earlier work on Ladybird and Little Women
Greta Gerwig landed her first Best Director Golden Globe nomination on Monday.
This comes after she was snubbed for her directorial efforts on Lady Bird in 2017 and Little Women in 2019.
Gerwig was nominated alongside Celine Song (Past Lives), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Bradley Cooper (Maestro) and Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things).
The multi-hyphenate star, 40, was also nominated for a Best Original Screenplay nomination alongside her partner Noah Baumbach for Barbie.
The summer blockbuster received nine nominations, including Best Musical or Comedy, Best Actress for Margot Robbie and Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling.
Gerwig, however, did receive a Globe nomination for her performance in 2014’s Frances Ha, and one for her Little Women screenplay.

In 2017, Gerwig was passed over for Lady Bird, despite the Saoirse Ronan-led comedy being nominated for a best picture comedy or musical nomination.
That year saw Natalie Portman famously famously criticize the lack of female representation in the Best Director category while she was presenting the Globe award.
‘And here are all the male nominees,’ Portman said as the names of Christopher Nolan, Martin McDonagh, Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott and eventual winner Guillermo del Toro were named.
During 2019 when Little Women received major award buzz, Gerwig was kept off the director’s list as well, as males dominated the category once again.
Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Bong Joon Ho, Sam Mendes and Todd Phillips made the list.
Throughout the history of the Globes, only nine women have received nominations for directing.
Among them, Barbra Streisand, Zhao, and Jane Campion stand out as the sole winners of the award.
Streisand, who won in 1984 for Yentl, made history as the first woman to receive the accolade.

This year’s awards have new categories for best cinematic and box office achievement, which is open to movies that have grossed $150 million, at least $100 million of which has to come from the U.S. box office.
Barbie and Oppenheimer both received nominations for cinematic achievement.
The 81st annual Golden Globe Awards will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
A host is yet to be announced.
