Richard Roundtree, star of the Shaft films and its 2000 and 2019 reboots, has died aged 81.
He died after a short battle with pancreatic cancer on Tuesday afternoon, October 24 and had his family by his bedside, Deadline reports.
His agency, Artists & Representatives, and his longtime manager, Patrick McMinn said they “mourns the loss of our friend and client Richard Roundtree” in a statement.
“His trailblazing career changed the face of entertainment around the globe and his enduring legacy will be felt for generations to come.
“Our hearts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Shaft co-stars Samuel L Jackson and Jessie T Usher have paid tribute to the Hollywood star after featuring together in the 2019 sequel.
Jackson portrayed John Shaft in the 2000 remake, in which Roundtree also returned, before The Boys star Usher also took on the iconic role in the latest reboot.
“Richard Roundtree, The Prototype, The Best To Ever Do It!!” Jackson wrote on his Instagram page.
“SHAFT, as we know it is & will always be His Creation!! His passing leaves a deep hole not only in my heart, but I’m sure a lotta y’all’s, too.

He then channelled the iconic Shaft theme recorded by Isaac Hayes: “Angels whispering, ‘That Cat SHAFT Is A Bad Mutha, Shutcho Mouth!! But I’m Talkin’ Bout SHAFT!! THEN WE CAN DIGIT‼️‼️‼️‼️”
Usher also penned a touching tribute on social media alongside pictures of himself, Jackson and Roundtree doing press for Shaft 2019.

“The image from the first time I met Mr. Roundtree will forever be imprinted in my memory…” he said.
“He was standing across the way, conveniently propped against the base of a light post as the cloud of smoke from his cigar wafted through the air like a literal depiction of his aura; illuminated by the only light source in the lot, which was directly above him hahaha – absolutely legendary.
“He taught me many things, but above all else, humility and thankfulness. He was and always will be the m*therf*cking man. Rest In Peace to the OG Richard Roundtree.”
