Callan Rydz forced to use just two darts during match – and he almost wins leg

Callan Rydz was forced to use just two darts during a match and incredibly almost battled to win a leg.

Rydz took on the 88th world ranked Irishman Dylan Slevin in the first round of the 23rd Players Championship of the year on Thursday, but an off-the-pace Rydz fell to a 6-1 defeat. The world No28 player’s day got worse before what proved to be the final leg of the game after he was forced to try and battle back with just two darts.

Suffering a rare ‘Robin Hood’ moment after the third dart he threw before losing the sixth leg landed directly into the back of the second dart, causing the point to snap and seemingly without a spare set with him, Rydz had to play the rest of the match with just two darts.

At the end of the sixth leg, Slevin led ‘The Riot’ 4-1 with a superior average of 95.90 to Rydz’s 81.42, and needing to checkout 85 to bring himself back into the game, Rydz’s ‘Robin Hood’ saw any chance of a comeback all but disappear.

As the final botched dart landed into the back of his second, Rydz punched his hand in frustration as he returned to the table behind the oche to inspect his darts. Rydz turned around visibly annoyed as Slevin checked out 9, D8 to take a 5-1 lead.

The game looked up for Rydz but he battled hard with just darts in hand as incredibly, his average went up after scoring back-to-back 120s, seeing a smirk appear on ‘The Riot’s’ face. Rydz managed to find a treble at every visit before he missed the T17 which would’ve left him two darts at the Bull to win a remarkable leg. But Slevin checked out 40 on D20 to win the leg and record a 6-1 win.

Rydz, who won the 19th Players Championship of the year at the beginning of September, said on Instagram: “(I) feel a lot better in myself,” after PDC bosses previously became concerned after he admitted in May he was ‘struggling mentally and physically’.

The 2022 World Championship quarter-finalist took to Instagram after his darting nightmare this week, posting a picture of his darts with the caption: “Don’t worry I have new points in. If worse comes to worse, I’ll play with two again.”
