Swiss watchmaker Longines has recently announced a makeover of its iconic Legend Diver watch, a highly regarded timepiece in the world of sports and underwater exploration. The redesigned model, while keeping in touch with its history, features modern upgrades in both design and functionality.
The new Longines Legend Diver watch, drawing on the design of the original 1959 model, now comes with a smaller 39 mm diameter case, suitable for a broader variety of wearers. The updated diver is available in two dial colors, classic black or blue and with a variety of straps and bracelets — making up four total iterations.
Longines’ journey into the world of water-resistant timepieces dates back to 1937 with its first chronograph featuring water-resistant push-pieces. The brand continued to introduce its first underwater watch in 1958, culminating in the creation of the original Legend Diver watch in 1959. This model was set apart by its Super-Compressor case with an internal rotating disc and dual screw-down crowns, a design that has become emblematic for the brand.
The 2023 Legend Diver is certified as a Divers’ Watch — ISO 6425 — ensuring water resistance up to 300 meters. Additionally, each timepiece undergoes rigorous testing for 15 days at various temperatures and positions to achieve its chronometer certification by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).
Inside the case, the watch is powered by the Longines L888.6 calibre, featuring a silicon balance spring. This component provides notable magnetic resistance, exceeding the ISO 764 standard by tenfold and guarantees a substantial 72-hour power reserve.
The dial of the Legend Diver, available in black or blue lacquer, is protected by a domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Visibility is enhanced by elongated indexes, raised luminescent Arabic numerals and polished rhodium-plated arrow-hands with Super LumiNova coating.
An internal bidirectional rotating bezel, a hallmark of the model, allows for precise dive time measurement but also features a safeguard within the case to prevent accidental adjustments.
As for style, the watch’s stainless steel case can be complemented by a choice of straps, including brown leather or a blue NATO strap. Alternatively, wearers can opt for an updated stainless-steel bracelet with a double-safety folding clasp. At the case back, the watch is adorned with the collection’s signature diver emblem, underscoring its heritage, alongside etched technical details.
All iterations of the new Longines Legend Diver are available now via the maker’s official site, with prices starting at $3,000 USD.
