The minds at Heinz have made a brand-new limited-edition sauce for the quarter of consumers who are into pasta with ketchup.
The sure-to-be-controversial Tomato Ketchup Pasta Sauce will evoke that… unique flavour without being purely ketchup.
It’s made with 10% of the product, but also 84% tomato purée and other ingredients including vinegar, olive oil, herbs and spices.
This is to preserve the pasta sauce-ness of it all while still having a hint of that flavour so many of us apparently enjoy.
While a survey of 2,000 UK consumers for Heinz found that more than half (59%) of people think it’s positively blasphemous to put ketchup on pasta, 24% have no problem with the idea.
Those most likely to be open to crack open a bottle for their pasta were between 18 and 34 years old.
Meanwhile, 11% have done so occasionally, and 8% do it regularly.
Heinz’s new ventures director Caio Fontenele said: ‘Never say never! Whether ketchup was originally intended to go on pasta or not, we couldn’t help but listen to the love our fans share on social media for the combination.
‘So, we’ve brought together our Heinz Pasta Sauce and Heinz Tomato Ketchup to give you the pasta sauce we’ve all been dreaming of. While some might say it’s ridiculously wrong, we think it’s simply, ridiculously good.’
The sauce will be available from October 4 at Tesco and the heinztohome website for four weeks, with an RRP of £2.50.
