Emmerdale: Adam Thomas says ‘never say never’ to show return
Strictly Come Dancing’s Adam Thomas played the role of Adam Barton in Emmerdale for nearly a decade between 2009 and 2018.
During his time in the ITV soap, fans saw his character tackle a series of storylines from a feud with Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), turning to arson, an on-off marriage with Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) and a bromance with Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller).
However, the loveable rogue was last seen in the soap fleeing the country in 2018 after taking the fall for Emma Barton’s (Gillian Kearney) murder, which had been committed by his mum Moira (Natalie J. Robb).
Making a hasty exit in a shipping container to start a new life in France, viewers were left heartbroken when Adam decided to leave Emmerdale.
Addressing the exit at the time, the actor confessed it wasn’t an easy decision for him to make.

In a statement, he said: “’I’ve had an amazing eight years working on Emmerdale and I’ve loved every minute of it.
“It was a really tough decision to take to leave but I felt that now is the time to move on and challenge myself with some new roles.
“I’d like to thank everyone at Emmerdale for both giving me the opportunity to work as part of such a great team and for giving my character Adam Barton some great storylines too.”
Following his exit, the 34-year-old went on to present the ITV spin-off show I’m A Celeb: Extra Camp alongside Emily Atack and Joel Dommett.

However, the show was axed the following year due to it being expensive to run during a non-primetime slot.
Five years after making his departure in Emmerdale, the actor teased to ITV’s Lorraine Kelly that he may one day return.
Paying tribute to his co-stars, he said: “You genuinely do become such a huge family, yeah I miss them all so much. Never say never, I would love to go back one day.
“If the story was right, yeah definitely. It’s always held a special place in my heart.”
Fans will have to wait to see whether or not Adam reprises his role as he’s swapped the Dales for the dancefloor.
Starring in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing line-up the 34-year-old is competing to raise the Glitterball alongside Les Dennis, Annabel Croft, Nigel Harman, Bobby Brazier and Jody Cundy.
Ellie Leach, Nikita Kanda, Angela Rippon, Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Amanda Abbington, Layton Williams, Angela Scanlon, Eddie Kadi and Zara McDermott are all also competing.
Strictly Come Dancing will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in autumn 2023 with further details about the air date and start time to be confirmed.
